Calculated cells are not displayed when in protected mode
Our take
When generating Excel files from software, users may encounter a common issue: calculated cells remain blank in protected mode until the "Enable Editing" button is clicked. This behavior can be confusing, especially when users expect to see the results of formulas upon downloading the file. While this protection mechanism aims to safeguard content, it can hinder user experience. To enhance accessibility, exploring ways to ensure calculated values display immediately in downloaded spreadsheets would significantly improve usability and streamline workflows for all users.
I'm generating an Excel file from software I'm writing. The spreadsheet contains numbers and some cells with formulas. This works fine.
But when users download these files, all the cells that contain formulas are not displayed. They are simply blank. Not until the user hits the Enable Editing button do the calculated values appear.
I understand this is some sort of protection. But I don't understand how hiding these cells protects anything. Is there any way to get these cells to appear when the spreadsheet is first downloaded and displayed.

- New cells added to a protected sheet will not lockI created a worksheet that required me to lock certain cells. The worksheet needed editing so I removed the protection so I could add additional columns. One of the two columns needs to be protected, while the other needs to be unlocked for data input. I made the unlocked range in the mange protection window and resumed protection on the worksheet but all new columns remained unlocked. All original cells on the worksheet (before the new colums) still lock and those that were put in an unlocked range remain unlocked. I am predominately working in the browser mode. I have used the desktop app to make sure all cells are locked in the fromat cells > protection settings. In the Manage Protection settings under options "Select locked celld" and "Select unlocked cells" are checked, everything else is unchecked. submitted by /u/middleCHILD-problems [link] [comments]
- Font formatting of a calculation dashboard KEEPS reverting every time the data in the other sheets is updatedI am at my wits end, every time I open this spreadsheet the formatting of these cells (supposed to be large and extremely readable to low-tech users on same team) reverts back to Calibri size 11 for some reason. I even created a custom cell style to try and force it to stay that way and I can see that it's selected in the menu, but not reflected whatsoever. Is it just impossible to format cells with a constantly changing calculation? What can I do here?? I feel like I have gone through every formatting constraint/rule there is to try and force it to behave but it always changes back, even if its not right away. It's a spreadsheet stored on sharepoint primarily but I don't know if that makes a difference. Advice appreciated. 😞 submitted by /u/vailette [link] [comments]
- Inserting new, whilst copying adjacent protected formulasDisclaimer! My Excel knowledge is intermediate at best! I’ve made a large workbook that my company wants me to share with colleagues as a standardised template (heavily formatted, not tabled). In order to prevent mistakes they’ve asked me to protect the workbook formulas whilst also maintaining the ability to keep functionality of adding more rows / columns. I’m having difficulty providing both. Example whilst the sheet is protected I can add a new row but it will not copy the previous formula (in my case, it’s a sequential reference to another sheet). I.e. Sheet1!A1, Sheet1!A2, etc. Very basic worked example: Cells A1:B10 are editable cells using edit ranges. Cells C1:C10 let’s say contain a basic formula =A*B. The sheet is protected but allows the inserting, formatting and deletion of rows / columns. I insert a row above row 10 the formula isn’t copied. I copy row 9 and insert above row 10 the protected sheet prevents me from doing this. Might just be me but I can’t see a way how this is possible without the use of Macros which I don’t want to do! submitted by /u/MrMC3113 [link] [comments]
- Stop Excel showing decimal point when no fractional digitsI want to format a range of cells such that a thousands separator is displayed if needed, and up to two fractional digits are displayed. If there are no fractional digits, then I do not want the decimal point displayed. In VB and C#, the format string to achieve this is "#,##0.##". But when I use this string in Excel, the decimal point is still displayed even when there are no fractional digits. This appears to be a bug with Excel. Has anyone found a workaround? If anyone is curious, I'm creating the spreadsheet from code using ClosedXML. So I can set the format string for cells, but I cannot go in and change Excel settings for all the users of my software. submitted by /u/NobodyAdmirable6783 [link] [comments]
