Inserting cells in one sheet also impacts other cells in the file
Our take
Inserting cells in one sheet can unintentionally affect other sheets within the same Excel file, particularly when they share the same column references. This behavior may seem puzzling, especially when complex formulas or macros are absent. In your colleague's case, recalculation settings could also play a role. To enhance efficiency and streamline workflow, it’s essential to identify the underlying cause of this issue. By exploring the options menu and adjusting settings, you can help resolve this challenge swiftly and effectively.
Hello sub,
Sorry to bother but I have a bit of a headscratcher... One of my colleagues is working on an excel file that has a lot of information but very few complex formulas, no macros to speak of.
Yesterday, she was inserting cells in "sheet 1" and cells were inserted in "sheet 2" in the same column.
We went through the options menu and we didn't see anything suspect or obvious (other than recalculation turned off for some reason)
This is really slowing down her workflow and I wish I could help her.
Thank you in advance,
RNP.

- Change contents of cells based on a drop downSo, I'm trying to generate a spreadsheet to make the forms we use in the office to issue keys. When people are given an apartment, we have a sheet with all the key numbers on it, and then they sign for it. At the moment, we've got 22 different PDFs and Word documents, and it doesn't work. So, what I want to do is this. I've built the template in Excel and created a Reference sheet which will have all the numbers in it. What I am trying to do is set it up so that when you use the Apartment number from a dropdown, it populates with all the key numbers. This sounds like it should be easy to do, but my Excel brain is broken. Advice would be much appreciated! submitted by /u/Hot_Syrup_1774 [link] [comments]
- Issue with spreadsheet containing time calculation formulasI have a new clock in/out machine which has 3 columns, 1 for clock in, 2 for clock out and a 3rd column for the total time worked. Staff can clock in/out multiple times a day. It comes to me as an xls file with all the in/out cells as 'general' format and the 3rd column is as custom hh:mm but not the subtraction formula to show the total time worked even though the numbers are right. If i change the in/out from general to custom and then hh:mm I seem to have to click each individual cell for the format to change from (ie) 09:58 AM to 09:58 without the AM but the PM cells still show PM and when i do the subtraction formula for the total time worked it comes out as an error value, no amount of trying different formulas will change it to what it needs to be. I don't mind the first 2 colums showing as AM/PM but even with them that way the subtraction for the total time calculation still comes up as with a 'value' error https://preview.redd.it/hvunwr4p58og1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=c11e3a1b77c137a4a40544c7bb2274e813d1038c submitted by /u/Loud-Conference8055 [link] [comments]
- Cell merging / formatting formulasThis might be an odd one. I'm not that skilled with excel as my use of in within my job is pretty limited. However, I tend to use this template my predecessor made to summarize data from our program. Works well, just a simple ='SHEET 1'!A1 for all cells. The first two images give an example. After the data is ported, I have to get rid of the zeros between the data and write system names. When it comes to pasting it on letters, the names are bolded, upped a font size, and two of the cells are merged (3rd image) This gets a bit tedious as the lists can get pretty long so I've been trying to figure out how to streamline it on my own. My idea has so far has been to have a separate cell detect when I'm finished adding my data and then format the aforementioned cells (4th image). For the life of me, just can't figure out how to write a formula to do it. What I would need is for the formula to detect a 1 (could be anything) in cell G10. It would then check for any blank cells in columns A and B. Once found, it would merge & center, bold the text, increase the font size, and align right. Is this only possible with a macro? I've been unable to find any formulas that could accomplish this. https://preview.redd.it/853mpr4jspog1.png?width=788&format=png&auto=webp&s=943a34a57f1d7c7f88256dd89b81b9c6fc301e34 https://preview.redd.it/e3w6ms4jspog1.png?width=453&format=png&auto=webp&s=9b189fa77d6638b627f8676dad60bc148753617c https://preview.redd.it/msh6ys4jspog1.png?width=411&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5f5025b315f24fd5f3a64c6e07e019abd3a77ab https://preview.redd.it/7j66tt4jspog1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=1faa4df12ee74892f5fa9dc27ac95621280cf3c5 submitted by /u/Extension_Train9093 [link] [comments]
- CTRL + [ shortcut has stopped workingHelp me… I have a file that I inherited that is a million years old, but my boss is committed to keeping the same file, same format, just rolling it over year after year after year. As such, there are formula names, references, hidden tabs, all sorts of junk that are clogging up the file and causing me all sorts of issues. I’m muddling through and fixing what I can, but this new issue is a real pain that I need solved asap. The file has stopped letting me use the CTRL + [ shortcut to go to the source cell - this is now bringing me to the last tab of the workbook. The F5 shortcut to return to the original cell is also no longer working. I don’t have the time right now to rebuild this file from scratch, so I’m hoping someone on here knows more about this issue than I do. Help me r/excel. You’re my only hope. submitted by /u/miss_kp [link] [comments]
