Opening VBA editor corrupts files
Our take
A weird issue has been plaguing my collegues and me for two weeks.
We are currently heavily relying on macros in many Excel files. For two weeks we have had the following issue: Upon opening the VBA editor via the developer tools in one Excel file, we can't open other Excel files. When we restart Excel by stopping the process, we can open the other files again, but we can't open the file we opened VBA in in the first place!
What do I mean when I write the file can't be opened?
Well, a message pops up that says that there are problems with contents of the file and that it has to be repaired. Some files can be repaired that way, some can't because they are apparently corrupt. When the files are repaired, most formulas don't work anymore (#NAME error) or are replaced by their value they had before the issue. I've added the repair logs from one of our more complex files as an example below. This happens with every file, no matter their size or complexity.
Has anyone encountered a similar issue? This is driving us insane.
We currently use the MacOS version of Excel (Version 16.106.2), the German localization.
The repair logs show the following:

- Excel .xlsm files showing “We found a problem with some content” after savingHi everyone, Good day. I’m currently experiencing an issue with Microsoft Excel involving macro-enabled files (.xlsm) that contain VBA code and are stored in Microsoft OneDrive. Scenario: I open an .xlsm file (with VBA), make edits or even just open and save it. When I reopen the same file, I get the error:“We found a problem with some content… Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can?” Additional details: Files created in 2025 were working before, but now they are no longer working even if I did not make any changes. The issue now happens consistently even without modifying the file. What I’ve tried: Opening and repairing the file Saving as a new file Checking OneDrive sync Has anyone encountered this issue recently, especially with OneDrive syncing and .xlsm files? Any suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help. https://preview.redd.it/wycqd6215fzg1.jpg?width=362&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a695ef001723887a5f9739c96e92bc21f0b5ab1e submitted by /u/Electronic-Tear-4567 [link] [comments]
- How to restore disappeared VBA Macros from Personal XLSBHi everyone, long story short, my computer was acting glitchy today so I restarted it. After, any workbook I tried to open would say it was "corrupt" and wouldn't open, or that it needed to be repaired. For the latter, it would say "Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing unreadable content" which was usually sheets I had deleted from the file (so no real content missing?). The big issue is my VBA macros are missing. I had saved all of them in my Personal XLSB. My Personal XLSB was also impacted by the issue above. It was after I repaired and saved the file that I noticed all the Macro modules are missing from the VBA editor (Alt+F11) and the macro dialog (F8). Macros are enabled in trust center, and there is no file history on the Personal XLSB. Of course I didn't back these up... :/ Interestingly, after repairing the Personal XLSB my other workbooks seem to open and run fine. No more popups stating the files are corrupt or need repair. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the macros back? I am definitely no expert in excel or VBA so just hoping I don't have to rewrite them all... submitted by /u/Chimestia [link] [comments]
- Excel Error: “File Corrupted” when downloading a file from Google Sheets. (Works on different PC )Hi everyone, I'm running into a frustrating issue while trying to move a large Google Sheet into Excel. I have a 30MB file containing complex formulas and several pivot tables. When I download it from google sheets and attempt to open it in Microsoft Excel, I receive the error: "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." The Mystery: • A version of this same file from a week ago downloads and opens perfectly. • The current file opens fine on other machines, but fails specifically on my primary workstation. What l've tried so far: • File Properties: Checked the "Unblock" option in the file's security settings. • Browsers: Attempted the download via different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge). • Browser Maintenance: Cleared cache and cookies before re-downloading. • Local Excel: Attempted "Open and Repair" within Excel (failed). Since the file works on other computers, I suspect it might be a local Excel setting, a temporary folder conflict, or a specific resource limit on my machine. Does anyone have suggestions for local Excel configurations or Windows settings that might be triggering this "corrupt" flag for larger files? submitted by /u/Sea-Cycle-2747 [link] [comments]
- Excel File reverted to previous version after power outageI had an excel file simply called "bills" that I've been using for the families accounting. I run some server stuff on the computer so its on 99% of the time. Today, the power cut out for about a minute and after rebooting the excel file got reverted to a version from November 2025. I have for sure saved the filed weekly if not daily since then, have autosave on, I have powered off the computer for updates and whatnot and reopened it and continued without problems, but now suddenly all that work has been lost. I have checked the auto recover feature, again only versions from way back last year. I've been told to check the temp files, but I'm either doing something wrong or their not excel files (made copies and trying to rename the extensions to .xls, still just jibberish). I'm freaking out because its how I budget around bills and taxes and whatnot. Its saved locally only so no cloud backups, there was another copy of it called like Bills.xlsx.xlsx but its also been reverted. I don't think I have any recent restore points either, but everything else on the computer is up to date after the power outage so I have no idea what happened. The ONLY thing that I can find that got reverted was excel, and I have no clue why or how, but urgently need to fix it. Any advice at all would be great, Microsoft support told me to kick rocks since its "Office Home & Student 2019" and therefore not their problem and I'm on Windows 10. submitted by /u/Weekly-Mushroom-2225 [link] [comments]
