Problem with getting charts to work
Our take
Every day, countless students and professionals encounter a moment familiar to anyone who has ever stared at a spreadsheet wondering why a seemingly simple task feels impossibly complex. The Reddit post from user yeeeeeeeeeen captures this exact feeling: they need to add error bars to a chart for an assignment, but Excel's interface has left them frustrated and stuck. Their message—"I am happy to give more info i just really don't know what I'm doing"—reflects a universal experience. This struggle isn't unique. Similar posts like Custom error bars excel problem and Individual error bars w/ a clustered bar chart?? appear regularly across help forums, each expressing the same confusion and urgency. The pattern is clear: error bars, despite being a standard statistical visualization tool, remain inexplicably difficult for average users to implement.
The core issue isn't about intelligence or capability—it's about design assumptions. Spreadsheet software has evolved with an underlying expectation that users already understand where to find specific features and how to navigate nested menus. When someone needs to add error bars, they're forced to decode a multi-step process: select the chart, right-click, find the right menu, navigate to the right submenu, choose between standard error or percentage or custom values, then specify the data range. Each step seems minor in isolation, but together they create a barrier that prevents users from completing their actual work. This reveals a fundamental mismatch between what spreadsheet tools assume about their users and the reality of how people actually approach data visualization.
This is precisely where the next generation of spreadsheet technology becomes relevant. Rather than expecting users to navigate complex interfaces, AI-native tools can understand what users are trying to accomplish and guide them there directly. Imagine describing what you need—"I want to show the standard deviation on this chart"—and having the system understand your intent rather than requiring you to locate a buried feature. This shift represents a fundamental change in how spreadsheets relate to their users: from tools that demand technical knowledge to tools that serve user intent. The question is not whether this transformation will happen, but how quickly it will arrive for the millions of people currently stuck on tasks like yeeeeeeeeeen's.
The broader implication matters beyond just error bars. When basic statistical visualization features remain hidden behind unnecessary complexity, it discourages people from using proper data representation in the first place. Students may abandon error bars entirely, professionals may settle for incomplete charts, and the quality of analytical work suffers as a result. The opportunity ahead lies in building tools that anticipate what users need and make sophisticated analysis accessible to everyone—not just those with specialized technical training. As spreadsheet technology evolves, the goal should be ensuring that no one has to apologize for not knowing where to find a feature that should have been intuitive from the start.

- Custom error bars excel problemSo I have data for a project that I made into a line chart, which took me almost 4 hours because of the fact that excel didn't want to take my data as It was, it would see it as zero's instead of normal decimal numbers. After troubleshooting that I have another problem. I have the line graph I only need to add my custom error bars. The numerical value of the numbers should be big enough to show up, but excel just doesn't want to add them. I am selecting the range and everything correctly, I've tried with completely different numbers, different graphs and converting them etc nothing works. Please help me troubleshooting I am going insane. submitted by /u/alt_bc_im_a_pussy [link] [comments]
- Individual error bars w/ a clustered bar chart??I'm super new to Excel and I have a lab write-up due tomorrow and have been struggling with this one thing! So I've created a clustered bar chart with three separate categories and two bars within each category! I'm like 85% sure that my data is grouped within two series, the two series of either bar according to what shows when I open "Select Data." I'm looking to add error bars to the six individual bars with Standard Errors that I have calculated and stored in a workbook (I think it's called?) but can't find a way to do that? I've tried doing the "Format Error Bars" --> "Custom" --> "Specify Value" but it always groups the bars within the two series together! Seriously approaching my breaking point any help is much appreciated!!! I'm wondering if I need to completely redo the table my chart is drawing its data from so each bar is of a separate series? But I also need it to look the way it does now, visually-wise, if that makes sense so who knows if that's possible! submitted by /u/Such-Kaleidoscope269 [link] [comments]

- How do I set error bars?I am trying to add error bars to a graph in excel. I keep selecting the deviation and once I press accept they disappear. I have tried everything: horizontal and vertical tables, copying and pasting the data and using it from there, using it fron the original table... I don't know what to do. It worked before but it doesn't anymore and Im desperate, I am currently breaking down submitted by /u/RaisinFree8943 [link] [comments]
