Sheet View not working in Excel online/Excel for the web/Excel web version even when hosted in OneDrive
Our take
I have a question regarding Excel for the web, aka Excel online and Excel web.
My team accesses Excel online via OneDrive. We would like to use sheet view in order to not see each other's sorting when we are all editing a sheet at once. However, we find that we are seeing each other's sorting even with sheet views turned on.
I have tried to find the answer by going though MS support articles, chatting with representatives, and using the Q&A forum where the AI answers the question. I have a screen recording demonstrating the problem.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Some information that may be useful:
- This issue happens regardless of how many team members are simultaneously editing the sheet. It's as though sheet view is not turned on at all
- We have tried using sheet view when both members are using a different sheet view, as well as when only one member is using sheet view and the other is using the Default view. The result is the same - we both only see the default view, as though sheet view is not turned on at all
- Sheet view is not grayed out in the toolbar. It appears fully active and functions exactly as described in the page linked above, with the exception that there is no effect on how spreadsheets appear to us (we all continue to see the Default view, and each other's sorting, when sheet view is turned on)
Our team setup meets all of the conditions described in the AI response to my Q&A post, which I will paste here:
If everyone is:
- Working in the same workbook stored on OneDrive/SharePoint, and
- Actually in a non-default Sheet View (eye icon visible, view selected from the Sheet View menu), and
- Using sorts/filters (not global hide/unhide in default view),
then each person’s Sheet View should prevent them from seeing each other’s sorts and filters in Excel for the web.
If the behavior still matches “everyone only sees the default view,” the next checks are:
- Confirm the file is opened from OneDrive/SharePoint (not a downloaded local copy).
- Confirm each person has explicitly selected a named Sheet View (or the temporary view) from View > Sheet View, and sees the eye icon on the sheet tab.
- Ensure sorts/filters are applied after entering the Sheet View, not before.

- Sheet views NOT KEEPING hidden columnsI'm working in Excel App for Mac and trying to use Sheet Views to make a large shared document easier for multiple departments to use. Context: The file is a big operational template where several departments work on the same sheet but each one only needs to see and edit certain columns. My idea was to create saved Sheet Views for each department so that when they switch to their view, only the relevant columns are visible. What I'm experiencing: • I create a Sheet View • I hide the columns that department does not need • I save the view But when I switch back to Default View and then return to that saved view, the columns are no longer hidden. Everything is visible again. It seems like the hidden columns are not actually being preserved inside the Sheet View. What I'm trying to achieve: Each department opens the file → switches to their view → only sees their relevant columns → edits those fields → changes affect the master sheet. Would appreciate any workflows people have used for this type of situation. submitted by /u/Which_Comparison_708 [link] [comments]
- NEED ADVICE re serious issues on collaborative company workbook. Appealing to Reddit's Excel wizards as a last resort.I work as part of a small team sharing an Excel workbook with my associates. The document is integral to company operations and requires continuous updating on multiple fronts. It is very large (7MB) and extremely complex, with about a dozen sheets using complex, interrelated formulas. There are up to four people on the document at any one time, with two of them making constant edits and using heavy filters throughout the day and the other two primarily just filtering for key items to inform business decisions. All four usually operate from different locations, sometimes across the country. We recently expanded the operations team from one to two people, since which time the document has been experiencing significant issues—none of which occurred prior to the new associate joining. These issues appear to stem from the new situation of having two people editing simultaneously for the first time, and include: Merging problems Regular crashes Filtering issues, such as when we are both filtered within the document and one person uses control+D to fill down in a filtered column, other rows that the one person’s filters do NOT show in that moment have been filled in as well. The workbook is stored on OneDrive but accessed and edited through the desktop Excel application with AutoSave enabled. Surely we are not the first business to face this issue. Are there any solutions we may be overlooking? How have other businesses approached such matters? It is imperative that the workbook remain updated in real-time for all involved for business purposes. Finally, please let me know if any other subreddits or communities (perhaps discord?) come to mind where I may find answers to the above. submitted by /u/LingeringOdor [link] [comments]
- How to link data from specific columns on one sheet to another, then sort it column A alphabetically and match the other columns based on corresponding data from Sheet 1I am a beginner at attempting to write formulas in Excel, and I am currently using Excel on a web browser mainly but can and do occasionally edit in the desktop version. I believe the version is Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 in the desktop version, or at least that's the product activated. I have two sheets on the same spreadsheet, and I want to pull in the data from 4 different columns to the second sheet and have it automatically update when there are changes or additions to the first sheet. I have a couple issues making this happen - the main one is that the data in my first sheet is custom sorted by color, but I want the new sheet to take the data from column B on sheet 1 and sort it alphabetically, and take the other columns and match them correspondingly to the correct values they match to from column B on the first sheet. Secondly, for blank cells, I want it to leave them blank instead of inputting zero, or any dates. I don't know if this is all even possible, or if I should just remove my custom filters from sheet 1 by cell color and just link it that way. I've spent hours trying to find formulas that work. Please see attached images for reference on what I've tried, and for more clarification as to exactly what I'm requesting. Sorry for the copious redacting, I wanted to be safe rather than sorry with identifiable info regarding this. - Viewing workbook online - protected sheet invisible in view but appears if set to editNot quite sure what's going on with this one. I have been shown a worksheet that has 2 sheets, one blank and one password protected. I am just view the spreadsheet online, I can't see the password protected sheet UNTIL I switch into edit mode. It then appears. How can I have this sheet visible to users when simply being viewed? submitted by /u/Ramjet_NZ [link] [comments]
