There Will Be a Scientific Theory of Deep Learning [R]

Our take

We are excited to introduce our perspective paper, "There Will Be a Scientific Theory of Deep Learning," authored by a diverse team of 14 contributors dedicated to advancing our understanding of deep learning. After years of focused research, we believe a cohesive theory is beginning to emerge. This paper synthesizes five key lines of evidence from recent studies, aiming to clarify the mechanisms behind these complex learning systems. Our goal is to inspire enhanced scientific inquiry into how and why deep learning operates.

Hi, all! I'm the lead author on this ambitious (14-author!) perspective paper on deep learning theory. We've all been working seriously, and more or less exclusively, on deep learning for many years now. We believe that a theory is emerging, and we pull together five lines of evidence in recent research into a portrait of the nascent science. Hoping to galvanize better scientific research into how and why these wild, huge learning systems work at all.
