What are the best techniques for optimizing Excel performance with large datasets?
Our take
I've been working with large datasets in Excel, and performance has become a significant concern. As the size of my spreadsheets grows, I've noticed slower load times and lag when applying formulas or filters. I'm keen to hear from the community about the best practices for optimizing Excel performance. Specifically, what strategies do you employ to manage large datasets effectively? Are there particular functions or features that help speed up processing? I've experimented with reducing volatile functions and minimizing the use of whole column references, but I'm eager to learn more. Also, how do you handle data organization to ensure that your workbooks remain responsive? Any tips on structuring data or using tools like Power Query would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your insights!

- Excel Performance optimisation tips!Working in demand planning I have got it the point where I am making some pretty advanced files using a suite of techniques. My files often have lots of rows, with lots of Columns of complex formula including with sumifs, xloopup, ifs & Let. I’ve not advanced to using tables regularly though as I find the constraints & syntax annoying but am trying to get there & have started using power query to blend data for output analysis. The problem I am encountering is I filter ALOT drilling down into product groups etc, & excel tends to ‘hang’ a lot with ‘Not Responding’. Now I’m not sure it’s due to an underpowered machine (intel core i7 HP Elitebook) or, more likely lots of complex formula referencing ranges or tables. My question to the hive brain: share your optimisation tips & tricks! -Can Lamda combined with Let speed things up? -Are Tables vital to speeding up complex sumifs & lookups? - are match helper columns combined with Index leaner & faster than xlookup? - What’s the most frustrating part of cleaning messy Excel/CSV data?I’ve been working with a lot of messy spreadsheets lately (duplicates, inconsistent formatting, mismatched columns, etc.), and it feels like everyone runs into slightly different issues depending on their data. Some people rely on Power Query, while others do things manually, but I still see workflows break when the data isn’t consistent to begin with. Curious what tends to slow you down the most when cleaning or organizing data? Is it duplicates, formatting issues, inconsistent columns, or something else? submitted by /u/SmitleyData [link] [comments]
- Any faster way to merge large Excel reports automatically?I am working with financial and operational data in Excel and facing a recurring issue. Every day multiple reports are generated separately and each file contains thousands of rows of data. The challenge is that I have to manually combine all these reports into a single dataset before doing any analysis or building dashboards. Even using Power Query and sorting takes a significant amount of time when the files are large. Is there a more efficient approach to automate this process. Ideally something that can automatically pull multiple files and merge them into one structured dataset. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would appreciate any suggestions or tools that could make this faster. submitted by /u/WoodpeckerNo5214 [link] [comments]
