Human ears edge out AI in audio CAPTCHA test but the gap is narrow

Humans still have the edge over AI in a focused audio CAPTCHA test, but the margin is uncomfortably thin, just 0.13 in word accuracy. In 18 sessions, people averaged 0.71 accuracy while the best model, Gemini with an explicit prompt, reached 0.54. No threshold came close to the ideal of humans above 80% and machines below 20%. The gap is too narrow for reliable security. Readers exploring how AI stumbles on nuanced tasks might also appreciate our piece on testing a browser agent's blind spots.
