Can a Strong MS Research Profile Open ML PhD Doors Without A-Star Publications?

A first-author NeurIPS rejection stings, and staring at undergrads with multiple acceptances can make the path feel closed. But the question isn't whether you match those profiles; it's whether your specific research trajectory signals readiness. You have independent work and first-author projects, which matter deeply to advisors who value autonomy over sheer volume. The ICLR submission is a gamble, but it proves you are iterating. If you can frame your experience as a research statement, not a publication list, you have a realistic shot.
