Why every RLVR gain in pass@1 has a hidden cost

Every RLVR gain in pass@1 comes with a hidden cost, and this paper proves why. The core finding is a no-free-lunch theorem: under exclusive specialization, every improvement on one prompt necessarily hurts performance on another. The authors model RLVR as an exponential tilt of the base policy and show the forced crossover between pass@1 and pass@k is structural, not fixable with more training. It's a theory paper that reframes the trade-off as a frontier worth understanding.
