Uber's Normalized Compute Units Bring Consistency to Chaotic Server Fleets

Uber's server fleet is famously chaotic, a mix of hardware generations, CPU architectures, and performance profiles that make consistent resource allocation a nightmare. Their solution is Normalized Compute Units (NCUs), a clever abstraction that brings order to the mess. This isn't about flashy new hardware; it's smarter measurement. By standardizing compute across wildly different machines, Uber can allocate capacity fairly and predictably. It's a pragmatic move that quietly solves a massive operational headache.
