Two AI detectors read the same papers but reached different conclusions

Two AI detectors looked at the same conference papers and came back with different answers. That's a problem worth unpacking. The NeurIPS 2026 chairs ran Pangram 3.3.2 on papers from an AI ethics conference, some from 2022 and some from 2025. We ran ParaTrace v7 on the same set. Neither detector flagged a single 2022 paper. For 2025, the gap widened: we flagged 7.3% of papers at the 50% threshold versus Pangram's 1%. The clean 2022 result rules out some explanations but not all.

When AI Detectors Punish Authors Without a Second Look

A desk rejection is supposed to feel final, but this feels arbitrary. NeurIPS used a proprietary detector to bounce 178 papers, and the chairs' own work would have failed the test. That is not quality control; that is a gamble. The real kicker is the ESL penalty, which means the tool punished clarity in non-native English. If you were caught in this, do not treat it as a verdict. Resubmit elsewhere.

Pangram secures $9M to help you identify AI-generated content

Pangram's $9 million raise lands at a moment when AI-generated text is blurring the line between useful and noisy. The startup's new Pangram 4 model targets that problem directly, with an image detection tool also in research preview. That matters because the real cost of AI slop isn't just clutter; it's the silent skewing of models trained on it. We've seen how easily false positives muddy the data, as our own piece on catching AI slop showed.
