A new open model detects personal data with a purpose-built benchmark

Detecting personal data in text has long been a brittle, error-prone process. A new open-weights model fine-tuned from RoBERTa on 1.2 billion synthetic samples changes that, offering context-aware PII identification that returns both the index and type of each instance, or a fully redacted version. The accompanying PII-SCOPE benchmark addresses common flaws in public LLM-generated datasets. It is refreshing to see a tool built for real-world utility, not just academic benchmarks.
