Can AI Agents Pursue Discovery Without a Defined Goal

Most AI agents only make discoveries when we hand them a metric to optimize. This research asks whether they can pursue open-ended questions without one. In a simulated scientific ecosystem, agents using a Supervisor mechanism and periodic Meta Reflection rediscovered 62.7% of findings from three ICLR papers, far outpacing baseline systems. That suggests open-ended discovery isn't just possible, it's a design choice. For more on how agents operate independently, see our piece on running AI agents with Docker's container simplicity.
