Understanding AI's Drive: What Sutskever Meant by "The Models Want to Learn

Ilya Sutskever's old koan, "The models just want to learn", sticks because it refuses to be merely technical. He wasn't talking about gradient descent or scaling curves. He was describing a disposition he saw in the phenomenon itself: remove the obstacles, give it good data, and the learning happens. That's a strange, almost spiritual framing for a machine. But maybe that's the point. The insight feels broader than any single training run.
