Excel Pivot Table Connections - Can't Connect, get an OLE Login, affecting all all files with pivot tables that aim at other files for the database. Only affecting me, at work, using sharepoint.
Our take
The recent issue faced by a user regarding Excel Pivot Table connections highlights an ongoing challenge many professionals encounter in data management. As outlined in the shared experience, the user has been met with persistent error pop-ups when attempting to refresh pivot tables linked to SharePoint files. This situation raises questions about the reliability of traditional spreadsheet tools, especially when reliant on external data sources. The problem not only stifles productivity but also underscores the limitations of current practices in managing complex datasets. Similar concerns have been echoed in other discussions, such as those found in articles like Pivot Table Show Details not working, any idea? and Refresh Data (Stocks?) -- "We need to fix your account" error -- logging back in not working. Anyone else experiencing / advice?.
The user’s plight is particularly telling as it illustrates how a single point of failure—such as a connection issue—can critically disrupt workflows. In this case, the user's inability to refresh data across multiple files that have been functional for years suggests a deeper, systemic issue that can arise when using legacy tools in a modern collaborative environment. It’s clear that while these pivot tables once served their purpose well, the reliance on SharePoint for data connections may be revealing cracks in their utility. This situation begs the question: how can teams continue to rely on traditional spreadsheet technology when they become increasingly prone to disruptions?
Furthermore, this scenario serves as a reminder of the importance of adaptability in data management practices. The user found a temporary workaround by creating new files and connecting them to the same data, yet this is not a sustainable solution. It emphasizes the necessity for organizations to embrace more robust and flexible data management systems. As we move forward, the integration of AI-native spreadsheet tools presents an opportunity to mitigate these issues, providing more resilient connections and streamlining data access. Organizations should consider investing in innovative solutions that prioritize seamless integration and user experience, ultimately leading to enhanced productivity.
As we reflect on this incident, it becomes evident that the future of data management lies not in clinging to outdated practices but in embracing transformative technologies. The question remains: how can businesses leverage emerging tools to not only solve immediate issues but also redefine their approach to data management altogether? The shift toward more intelligent, AI-driven solutions will likely dictate the trajectory of spreadsheet technology; thus, it is crucial for organizations to stay informed and proactive in exploring these innovations. Moving forward, the focus should be on empowering users with tools that not only simplify their tasks but also enhance their overall data experience, paving the way for a more efficient and effective future.
Had to censor the work related URLs.
This just started this morning.
- Files are almost exclusively .xslb (but ive confirmed that it is still doing it with a xlsm file as well) files that host a table of data.
- They are pivot tables/charts linked to the xslb files and created from those tables.
- We have been using them for years now.
- It is only affecting me (currently). I am the team lead, and i created all the files. The team is the ones that does pretty much all of the editing day in and day out. I just look at them now. I used to be the one editing them daily.
- It is affecting files only I have access to as well (so its not just a team members computer messing something up) , including ones i haven't edited in weeks.
- I have tried reverting versions to old copies, more than 2 weeks old and still does the same thing.
- Corporate laptops, that we cannot update/install/uninstall things.
- I have restarted / shut down multiple times today.
Main issue
When i load up one of the files, and click refresh (i have done by right clicking on the table and clicking refresh, by going to data, and clicking refresh all, and by the VB refresh script i have been using) and the linked pop ups are the errors im getting.
The files are confirmed to be accessible, and not open in the background. I can open each database file and save updates to them. I cannot however, pull data from them.
In the last popup, the file that it references for "Data Source" is always unique to whomever the last person to save the file was. Looks like a temp file.
If i create a brand new file, recreate the same pivot table by doing the Data --> Get Data From File ---> browse to the sharepoint location, select the file. Import it and close and load to pivot table, it grabs the table successfully. If i then do a refresh on the new table, it works and refreshes just fine. However, its a querie and not a connection.
If i try to instead go to Insert ---> Pivot table from external data source ---> and select the file on sharepoint. It will not load the file at all. If i instead download the file locally, and load it from the downloads folder, it will load the file and let me pick a table.
So im leaning towards a connection to the sharepoint between excel and sharepoint.
Thank you for any help solving this.

- Pivot Table Show Details not working, any idea?Hi there, I am facing with a quite unique issue I think. There are some pivots in an Excel file that we use for internal reports for the AP team. The issue is that for the pivots there are several filters applied on, like Intercompany filter or "is the amount negative" etc. but there is the most important one is the Vendor filter, there are numerous vendors excluded, and I was like okay let me just recreate the pivot from the ground, but that would take a bit too much due to the vendor filter. The main problem is that the show details is not working, if I execute a double click on the pivot's total cells then it is loading for a 0.1 second and then nothing happens. If I try it after I close and reopen the file, then it loads for 2 seconds, with the botom right text saying "Reading Data" but then nothing, same results. It is a connection based pivot table, I tried to copy and paste into a new sheet the Pivot, didn't work, I tried to Save & Repair the file, it didn't work. Any idea? submitted by /u/Strange_Cell1142 [link] [comments]
- Refresh Data (Stocks?) -- "We need to fix your account" error -- logging back in not working. Anyone else experiencing / advice?I have spreadsheets that import investment and benchmark information through Microsoft's Stocks function. Since Thursday, when I hit "refresh data", it gives me a popup error: "We need to fix your account. In Excel, go to File > Account > Sign out, then sign back in with the account associated with your subscription." Obviously, I tried this -- logged out and logged back in. Restarted computer, logged out and in. Still receiving the error in multiple spreadsheets. I have a a vaild, paid subscription. I thought it might self-resolve and these problems usually do, but it has not yet. Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have a fix? submitted by /u/cryptenigma [link] [comments]
