Anyone know how to build a very simple Gantt that you can actively edit to track progress?

Hi, I'm getting extremely frustrated in work trying to create a gantt chart for a project that could potentially be running until next year. The simple gantt template on excel is too complex as it goes into days. I'm trying to edit it so that I am only tracking by Q1,Q2 etc and the months of the year. Don't know how to edit it with all these formulas involved. Does anyone know of an alternative. I have tried to manually do it but can't.
Also, I would consider myself as a beginner with Excel - despite being examined on it in college!

- Looking for project tracking ideasHi, As the title suggests I’m trying to create an Excel sheet that tracks the progress of various projects. Essentially, I was given a messy excel document to look after. I don’t have particularly advanced skills and nor do I want to spend too much time on this. So… One sheet lists projects as rows and they all have a reference code. There is a column designated for “action updates” where people overwrite progress each month. Other columns exist for project status, dates etc. My idea was to create another sheet which also lists the projects but acts as an action/change history log. I attempted to have a drop down through grouped cells that would act as a historic list of all changes and action updates around each project. The row with the corresponding project number would act as a “live view”, so using an X look up to display this data on the original sheet. Is there a better way to create something like this? - I have been attempting to make a project planner like a Gantt chart, But I wanted it to have levels to it, like 1. Project, 2. Tasks, 3. Subtasks. But I find it hard to implement. Any ideasI have been developing a project manager for about a year... but I keep coming back to one problem. I generally have 1 big sheet, But I am trying to have a drop-down section to include tasks and sub-tasks.
