Cannot Delete a Row, It Only Clears the Row
Our take
Frustration with spreadsheet limitations can feel like hitting a wall, especially when you’re trying to manage important data like a college basketball roster. Many users encounter the issue of being unable to delete a row, only having the data cleared instead. This common problem can disrupt your workflow and lead to wasted hours. Fortunately, understanding the underlying reasons and potential solutions can transform your experience. Let’s explore what might be causing this issue and how you can regain control over your spreadsheet.
Just like the title says. When I go to delete a row in my spreadsheet, It only clears the data, does not delete the row. I recognized the error last night and have spent 6 hours creating an exact replica of the file today. It has happened again and I am absolutely livid right now. Anything I look up seems to never have had an actual solution. Does anyone have any idea of what may be going on? This is a spreadsheet I use for College Basketball and was hoping to have done, and up and running already.

- Rows in file not getting deletedI am working on a data set where suddenly I am unable to delete few rows in between. As in only the data in the cells are getting deleted but the empty row is still present. Tried ctrl & -, manually deleting, tried converting to table and deleting. Tried all methods suggested by chat gpt and co pilot. This is a simple data set with values in general, text, number and date format. What is irritating is this is affecting all the other sheets in the same file. The only alternative solution now which is working is copying the entire data set everyday to a new sheet and then reworking. Can anyone explain why exactly this is happening. Been working with excel for few years and being unable to find the exact RCA is ruining my peace. Update: Unable to add rows as well. submitted by /u/dex_lab [link] [comments]
- Cant delete row after making table (?)https://preview.redd.it/70l6bzktnuqg1.png?width=620&format=png&auto=webp&s=0bf62b64c3fe832f9bb819b15c1f49f03950e0a6 Hi! I accidentally made a table from some of my data, but now I can't delete row 93. I've tried a few things that normally work, but it seems to persist. Does anyone have any idea of what I can try next? - Deleting rows that cross merged cells, I feel like I'm losing my mind.I just got a new work laptop, and I thought I had it all set back up the way I like it. I use an Excel sheet every single day for work and I've been using the same sheet for years. I use a lot of merged cells for what I do, and ever since I've been using this sheet, to delete a row I don't need, all I ever had to do was right-click on the row number and click delete row, and it would leave the merged cells alone and just shrink the merged area to whatever was covered minus that row. Now it's highlighting all rows included in the merged cell when I left- or right-click the row number, and Google said what I'm trying to do is impossible, despite being able to do it perfectly fine for years. if I right click an individual, unmerged cell, and click delete, it gives me the option then to delete the whole row, and it works as expected with the merged areas. I've checked all the settings and I didn't see anything that would seem to have anything to do with what I want, so am I crazy? Am I imagining the last 3 years of using this sheet? submitted by /u/clutzyninja [link] [comments]
- Excel Online... is there a way to stop users from deleting rows/columns but still allow them add and delete text from cells?Ok, I'm pretty stuck on this one and am not sure why. I'm using Excel Online (yea, I know... it sucks). I'm attempting to create a filterable table in A1:M1000 that users can enter data into. Where I'm stuck is this... I want users to be able to enter/delete (delete by selecting an entire row and hitting 'delete'), use drop downs, and filter A:M all within that range. I do not want them to be able to edit anything outside of that range (so N -> beyond and 1001 -> beyond) AND I do not want them to be able to add or delete rows/columns across the entire sheet. My hiccup is coming here... how do I lock the sheet while allowing users to add data to A1:M1000, select a row and hit 'delete', but NOT add or delete rows/columns? I've attempted to lock the entire sheet but unlock A1:M1000; however users then cannot select and entire row and hit delete. Anyone have any helpful tips for this? submitted by /u/Tacticool_Turtle [link] [comments]
