Cells filled in without Auto-Fill, formulas, or AI--what did I misunderstand?
Our take
I might just be dumb but I can't figure out what happened today. I'm working on a quarterly report where I use a downloaded .cvs file as the bones. I clean the data, insert columns needed, and in some of those columns, I put enter formulas, do the whole autofill thing, normal stuff, right? I've done this report several times. My report has over 2000 lines of data that I have to check manually because the formulas aren't perfect. It doesn't take super long, and after a day and a half, I've gotten through 1400 rows. The weird thing happened when I got to the 1400s. I noticed a row I hadn't gotten to had data in a column with no formula, correctly formatted and accurate. When I kept scrolling, the entire rest of the column was filled in correctly without me editing it. There was no formula to auto-fill, and I don't use Copilot AI. I didn't copy and paste anything, none of that. I hadn't looked at that part of the sheet yet. It's probably silly, but it kind of freaked me out. This spreadsheet isn't shared with anyone, I'm the only one with access. The initial report is just data that I then break into chunks and send to someone else for the next stage.
Google only showed me Auto-Fill and Flash-Fill as explanations, and I didn't use either. I looked in the settings and couldn't find any permission that matched, and I don't know how to explain this besides ghosts, I guess. At the end of the day, it's less work for me, so I'll take it, but if anyone can kindly explain what I'm missing that makes this make sense, I would appreciate it!

- Slow spreadsheet - need troubleshootingHi, I have a spreadsheet that has two tabs, one is essentially the original data which is YTD driven for a particular GL account, the company has smaller amounts of transactions, so by December we are talking about maybe 3-5k rows of transactions for the account total. The main tab being utilized, has about 30 columns of look up and sumifs formulas referencing the source data and in total approx maybe 500 rows by year end? To me it doesn’t seem excessive. I’ve dealt with way heavier spreadsheets that have more omph and run faster. But for some reason this one is slow as all hell to work in. I’ve even tried barcoded some data and not seen any improvement. I’m not too techy into what else could be slowing it down. And ideas on what to troubleshoot from here? submitted by /u/SlideTemporary1526 [link] [comments]
- Excel templates for statistics displaying incomplete answersI am taking an intro to statistics class, and we are allowed to use software with built-in templates to solve problems (in fact it's encouraged), but I am not very confident as far as creating complex tables, and have been trying to find pre-built tables so that I don't have to either a) learn Excel to the level that I could comfortably design my own templates or b) make a spreadsheet from scratch for each problem. There is a free online course from OER Commons that has template that would help me get through the huge volume of very similar problems I have to do, so far it's the only resource I have found that covers everything I need (I have looked at many sites that offer templates, so far the second best is one called Real Statistics, which has some helpful things but is not comprehensive). BTW I have tried using StatCrunch, which has all the functions that these OER spreadsheets do, but I find Statcrunch extremely clumsy, especially because it is very bad for doing basic calculations. When I download the templates from OER Commons, via a page called "Excel Templates as a Statistical Tool," to my untrained eye, it appears that some of the formulas are either not active or did not download successfully, as certain cells which should autopopulate with answers remain blank after I enter data. I am wondering whether these templates are flawed, or whether there is a setting that I need to adjust in order to activate their full functionality. I used the Control + ~ button to try to see what formulas are there and which are missing, and the screenshots below show that only one of the expected formulas appears to be working. There are many different sheets, for different types of problems, but all suffer from this same problem of having only one or two functioning formulas. I am wondering if there might be some things I could try to in order to restore the full functionality of these templates. - Excel formula automatically rewriting itself??Hi all, this is a really odd problem to run into and I am unsure how to proceed from here. I am currently entering data and I have Excel performing an =SUM(B5:AC5) for my data that is being entered. Because the data entry can go pretty fast sometimes, I would keep entering data past AC5 before I realize what happened. When I look at my SUM column, Excel has flagged my =SUM(B5:AC5) formula with the error below, which is fine and whatever, but it is automatically changing my =SUM(B5:AC5) formula to =SUM(B5:AF5) or something of similar depending on what column I stopped at. Just for reference, data from AD5 to AO5 is being summed up in another column with SUM=(AD5:AO5). Formula error being flagged by Excel I have no idea why it is doing this and I tried to ignore error, but it still automatically rewriting my formula anyways! This worksheet and formula worked smoothly 4 months ago so I don't know what is going on. submitted by /u/WildKhanine [link] [comments]
- Cell contents shifted in part of one column on their own?I have an old and large (60k+ rows across several sheets) Excel 97 sheet in which I just noticed something odd. In one column, about 23k rows down out of 48k, all the data in the cells shifted up two rows. The majority of the cells in this column are blank, so it was easy to miss and I don't know when it happened. I'm not asking for how to fix it -- I don't know how much data was added to this column after the shift, so I can't just move everything back down in a clump. I'm going to have to move it all back down manually (luckily it's not critical data). I'm just wondering how this might have happened. Does it sound like any known bugs? This is Excel 2016 btw yes I still use it. thanks... submitted by /u/kreniigh [link] [comments]
