Have you encountered some users who can't refresh Power Query?
Our take
Are you experiencing difficulties with Power Query refreshes in Excel? A user has reported a puzzling issue where one team can refresh their queries without problems, while another team encounters errors indicating that the source file cannot be found or that columns are missing. Both teams have identical permissions and are using Microsoft 365, yet the problem appears isolated to this specific file in a shared Google Drive folder. If you've faced similar challenges or found solutions, your insights could be invaluable.
I’m running into a Power Query refresh issue in Excel that I haven’t been able to resolve through Googling.
We have an Excel file with Power Query connections that a team uses to refresh and pull updated data. The file is stored in a shared Google Drive folder, and both teams involved have the same access permissions.
Here’s the issue:
- One team is able to refresh the queries without any problems.
- Another team receives errors when trying to refresh, with error messages that the source file cannot be found or that columns are missing.
Additional context:
- We are all using Microsoft 365.
- Permissions appear to be identical across both teams.
- I am able to refresh the file successfully without errors, so are other people within my team, so obviously not a source file issue.
- I’ve created other Power Query–based Excel files in the same shared folder, and the affected team can refresh those without any issues.
- The problem seems isolated to this specific file.
Has anyone encountered this issue before? Has anyone resolved this issue before?
My last ditch effort would be to just recreate the whole thing and see if that fixes it.
Here's the error message if you're interested. It doesn't help: https://i.imgur.com/Gss7SHt.png

- Power Query Refresh TimeI created an Excel file with a Power Query product database. It takes item-level data (sizes, colors, logos, etc.) from an Item Master, expands it into all SKU combinations, and builds out a final product database with pricing and item info. It also pulls in a predetermined product codes from a separate tab with 300,000 rows. When I refresh the file (both at home and at work), it takes about 20 seconds with 50 rows. I had a couple coworkers try the exact same file, and it takes about 2 minutes for them to refresh. It is the same file, same data, same network, and similar computers. I can’t figure out why it’s consistently faster for me than everyone else. Any ideas of what could be causing this? submitted by /u/Presto1985 [link] [comments]
- Excel Power Query refresh suddenly incredibly slowHi everyone, I have a file that I refresh daily with several queries. One of those became incredibly slow (few seconds to hasn't finished yet) from one day to the next. Nothing changed in the file or source, it is not very large (~5000 lines) and without any manipulations other than changing the data type. I have tried to change the privacy levels, background refresh, fast load and so on as I found online, but nothing helped. How can I solve this? Thank you! submitted by /u/Loose_Biscotti9075 [link] [comments]
- Power Query refresh speed with multiple usersHello all. I have a report that has multiple queries with data sources saved in SharePoint. Enable Fast Data load is checked in all the queries. There are about 10 users, with reported run time of around 5-10 minutes. But for me and one user, it takes 30-60 minutes to finish refreshing. I have already made some improvements in the initial code, and did a clean up of old raw data files in SharePoint but this resulted to minimal improvements. Given that all users have the same laptop configurations and are connected to the same internet connection, what are some steps I can do to do improve the speed on the queries? submitted by /u/SYSTEMOFADAMN [link] [comments]
- Excel Pivot Table Connections - Can't Connect, get an OLE Login, affecting all all files with pivot tables that aim at other files for the database. Only affecting me, at work, using sharepoint.Error pop ups Had to censor the work related URLs. This just started this morning. Files are almost exclusively .xslb (but ive confirmed that it is still doing it with a xlsm file as well) files that host a table of data. They are pivot tables/charts linked to the xslb files and created from those tables. We have been using them for years now. It is only affecting me (currently). I am the team lead, and i created all the files. The team is the ones that does pretty much all of the editing day in and day out. I just look at them now. I used to be the one editing them daily. It is affecting files only I have access to as well (so its not just a team members computer messing something up) , including ones i haven't edited in weeks. I have tried reverting versions to old copies, more than 2 weeks old and still does the same thing. Corporate laptops, that we cannot update/install/uninstall things. I have restarted / shut down multiple times today. Main issue When i load up one of the files, and click refresh (i have done by right clicking on the table and clicking refresh, by going to data, and clicking refresh all, and by the VB refresh script i have been using) and the linked pop ups are the errors im getting. The files are confirmed to be accessible, and not open in the background. I can open each database file and save updates to them. I cannot however, pull data from them. In the last popup, the file that it references for "Data Source" is always unique to whomever the last person to save the file was. Looks like a temp file. If i create a brand new file, recreate the same pivot table by doing the Data --> Get Data From File ---> browse to the sharepoint location, select the file. Import it and close and load to pivot table, it grabs the table successfully. If i then do a refresh on the new table, it works and refreshes just fine. However, its a querie and not a connection. If i try to instead go to Insert ---> Pivot table from external data source ---> and select the file on sharepoint. It will not load the file at all. If i instead download the file locally, and load it from the downloads folder, it will load the file and let me pick a table. So im leaning towards a connection to the sharepoint between excel and sharepoint. Thank you for any help solving this. submitted by /u/CanBeUsedAnywhere [link] [comments]
