Password to edit, but password no longer on the spreadsheet
Our take
I've got a spreadsheet that previously required a password to edit. I've since removed that password requirement and it opened okay for a few weeks; however it's now reverted to asking for a password to edit again.
I've checked into the field where the password was (is) held and it is blank [Tools > General Options] and yet it still asks for this info.
If I change it so that it does require a password to edit, then it does require the new password that I add. And if I then subsequently remove that password, then Excel still requires me to enter the new password that I have just added.
Any thoughts as to what's going on? I've asked an AI and it had a few suggestions, all of which I've tried, but I'm still at the same place.

- New cells added to a protected sheet will not lockI created a worksheet that required me to lock certain cells. The worksheet needed editing so I removed the protection so I could add additional columns. One of the two columns needs to be protected, while the other needs to be unlocked for data input. I made the unlocked range in the mange protection window and resumed protection on the worksheet but all new columns remained unlocked. All original cells on the worksheet (before the new colums) still lock and those that were put in an unlocked range remain unlocked. I am predominately working in the browser mode. I have used the desktop app to make sure all cells are locked in the fromat cells > protection settings. In the Manage Protection settings under options "Select locked celld" and "Select unlocked cells" are checked, everything else is unchecked. submitted by /u/middleCHILD-problems [link] [comments]
- Cells filled in without Auto-Fill, formulas, or AI--what did I misunderstand?I might just be dumb but I can't figure out what happened today. I'm working on a quarterly report where I use a downloaded .cvs file as the bones. I clean the data, insert columns needed, and in some of those columns, I put enter formulas, do the whole autofill thing, normal stuff, right? I've done this report several times. My report has over 2000 lines of data that I have to check manually because the formulas aren't perfect. It doesn't take super long, and after a day and a half, I've gotten through 1400 rows. The weird thing happened when I got to the 1400s. I noticed a row I hadn't gotten to had data in a column with no formula, correctly formatted and accurate. When I kept scrolling, the entire rest of the column was filled in correctly without me editing it. There was no formula to auto-fill, and I don't use Copilot AI. I didn't copy and paste anything, none of that. I hadn't looked at that part of the sheet yet. It's probably silly, but it kind of freaked me out. This spreadsheet isn't shared with anyone, I'm the only one with access. The initial report is just data that I then break into chunks and send to someone else for the next stage. Google only showed me Auto-Fill and Flash-Fill as explanations, and I didn't use either. I looked in the settings and couldn't find any permission that matched, and I don't know how to explain this besides ghosts, I guess. At the end of the day, it's less work for me, so I'll take it, but if anyone can kindly explain what I'm missing that makes this make sense, I would appreciate it! submitted by /u/gremlinwitchboi [link] [comments]
- Change contents of cells based on a drop downSo, I'm trying to generate a spreadsheet to make the forms we use in the office to issue keys. When people are given an apartment, we have a sheet with all the key numbers on it, and then they sign for it. At the moment, we've got 22 different PDFs and Word documents, and it doesn't work. So, what I want to do is this. I've built the template in Excel and created a Reference sheet which will have all the numbers in it. What I am trying to do is set it up so that when you use the Apartment number from a dropdown, it populates with all the key numbers. This sounds like it should be easy to do, but my Excel brain is broken. Advice would be much appreciated! submitted by /u/Hot_Syrup_1774 [link] [comments]
- Calculated cells are not displayed when in protected modeI'm generating an Excel file from software I'm writing. The spreadsheet contains numbers and some cells with formulas. This works fine. But when users download these files, all the cells that contain formulas are not displayed. They are simply blank. Not until the user hits the Enable Editing button do the calculated values appear. https://preview.redd.it/5vlwzrlrttsg1.png?width=1092&format=png&auto=webp&s=2a38bae278bf63ce2802b20efa1bb088d1f78f77 I understand this is some sort of protection. But I don't understand how hiding these cells protects anything. Is there any way to get these cells to appear when the spreadsheet is first downloaded and displayed. submitted by /u/NobodyAdmirable6783 [link] [comments]
