Automate repetitive IP checks with a smarter, simpler spreadsheet.

Are you tired of manually sifting through IP addresses in Excel to check for duplicates?

This is the kind of repetitive, manual work that should have been automated years ago, and the fact that it still eats up hours of a skilled networking professional's week tells you everything about how far behind the tools most teams rely on have fallen. This user isn't asking for a miracle. They are asking for a smarter way to turn a list of sequential IPs into a single, functional grep command without retyping every octet. That's not a complex request, it's a sign that the spreadsheet they are using was never designed to think with them.

The core problem here is simple: the template works, but the process of populating it does not. Copy-pasting hundreds of addresses, one by one, into a string that grows longer with each entry is not data management. It is data entry dressed up as network administration. What this user really needs is a worksheet that understands the pattern, that when you list "1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.2, 1.1.1.3," the tool should recognize the sequence and generate the pipe-delimited string automatically. A few adjacent cells, a CONCATENATE or TEXTJOIN formula, and a reference to the previous row's final octet would turn a ten-minute chore into a ten-second refresh. That is not advanced wizardry. That is the minimum expectation for a tool that claims to support modern workflows.

The deeper truth is that this user's frustration reflects a wider gap in how we think about spreadsheets. Too many professionals treat them as static grids, when the real value lies in treating them as programmable environments. A spreadsheet that can auto-increment IPs, build grep strings, and validate syntax before you ever run the command is not a luxury, it is a productivity multiplier. And for someone managing hundreds of devices across a network, every minute saved on repetitive checks is a minute recovered for architecture, security, or simply not burning out.

Our take is straightforward: stop treating your spreadsheet like a digital notepad. Give it rules, let it calculate, and make it generate your search strings so you can focus on interpreting the results. The solution this user needs is already within reach, it just requires shifting from manual repetition to intentional design. That shift is what separates a tool you tolerate from one that actually empowers your work.

Hey! I work in networking and have been tasked with checking 100's of IP addresses for duplicate entries across an entire network, currently everyone is copy+pasting the IPs to search into a template that looks like the below:

grep -E -e "Customer name|X.X.X.X|X.X.X.X|X.X.X.X" *.net*
