Are you feeling overwhelmed trying to create a timesheet that pulls data from one spreadsheet and adds values to another?

It takes honesty to admit you're in over your head, and the user who posted this question showed exactly that kind of clarity. Their request is straightforward: link job numbers and assigned people across spreadsheets so that hours add up automatically. Yet they describe themselves as a "super beginner" and are ready to give up before starting. That's the real problem here, not the spreadsheet itself, but the gap between what people need to do and what traditional tools make them feel capable of doing.

That gap is not the user's fault. Spreadsheets have been sold as simple for decades, and they are, until you need them to actually work. The moment you want one sheet to talk to another, or to sum hours based on a job name instead of a cell location, you hit a wall. The user's example is textbook: Job A is worth 12 hours, Job B is worth 3 hours. They want a timesheet that knows the difference. That is not an advanced request. It is a basic data relationship, and it should not require a degree in Excel formulas or a willingness to "admit defeat."

Our take is plain: you should not have to feel this way. A tool that demands you learn nested functions and cross-sheet references just to add up hours is a tool that has not evolved. The user is not the problem. The spreadsheet is. And the solution is not a longer tutorial or a steeper learning curve. It is a smarter approach, one where you describe what you need in plain language and the tool handles the link.

For this user, the practical path forward is to find a system that treats their data like a connected web, not a set of isolated grids. They need a way to say "Job A hours go here" and have the software figure out the rest. That exists now. It does not require them to become an expert first. It requires them to explore a tool that meets them where they are. The hours are real. The jobs are real. The frustration does not have to be.

I am not sure exactly what I am looking for. I am a super beginner in excel. Think middle school in 2008 kind of beginner. I am trying to help with building a time sheet that will allow us to have one spreadsheet that will have job numbers and the people who have been assigned to the job and take that into another spreadsheet that will add numbers based on the job. eg, Job A is worth 12 hours, Job B is worth 3 hours. I feel as though I may be entirely out of my depth with this and…
