Clean up your Pivot Table by removing unwanted average rows and columns.

Are you frustrated by the "Average" label at the top of your Pivot Table, especially after unpivoting your data?

The pivot table is not your enemy. It just has a bad habit of showing you things you didn't ask for. This user's frustration, staring at an unwanted "Average" label that stubbornly mirrors the field name in the Values box, is the kind of small, daily friction that makes spreadsheet work feel like housekeeping instead of analysis. The fix is straightforward: rename the value field in the PivotTable Fields pane, and the label updates with it. But the deeper point here is that this friction shouldn't exist in the first place.

Traditional spreadsheets treat rows and columns as static containers. You build a pivot, and you inherit whatever defaults the software decided were smart. If you want to remove a label without removing the calculation it belongs to, you often resort to workarounds, hiding rows, formatting text white, or rebuilding the field from scratch. These are patches, not solutions. They interrupt your flow and signal that the tool is managing you instead of the other way around. An AI-native spreadsheet would recognize that the label is redundant when the calculation is already self-evident, and it would ask: do you want this shown or hidden? Not force you to hunt for a workaround on a forum.

The encouraging part is how the user pivoted (pun intended) to a better workflow. They unpivoted their data first, which is the right foundation for flexible analysis. That move alone made their Overview sheet easier to manage. It shows an understanding that clean data structure beats clever formulas every time. The frustration with the pivot label is real, but it's also a signal that this user is ready for a tool that anticipates their intent rather than waiting for instructions.

Here is what we think: the industry has spent decades making pivot tables more powerful but not more intuitive. Power is good. Power without clarity is just complexity waiting to trip you up. The next generation of spreadsheets should let you say "show me the average by region, but don't call it 'Average of Revenue' because I can see what it is." That's not a luxury feature. It's a basic expectation of a tool that respects your time. If you are currently fighting labels, grand totals, or default formatting, take it as a sign that your data deserves a smarter home.

Since I've unpivoted the data, the Overview sheet is coming along much easier for me than I was having in my last thread.
