Column graph with different experimental groups, fractions, needing average and error bars on Mac
Our take
Hi I'm trying to create a graph for a biology lab in which we were examine 5 different cellular fractions and finding the percentage of an enzyme present in each fraction.
For this question we were provided with this table for which we have to generate a column graph which compares the percentage of enzyme units in the different fractions. Making sure we include error bars indicating the standard deviation for each sample.
We were also provided with an example of what the graph should look like (see below). This shows the average activity for each fraction.
I am terrible at using excel and I've tried a few different ways to try get my graph similar to this.
This first attempt I know is obviously wrong. I selected all my data and created a column chart.
Attempt #2 led me here. I created this by making a smaller table with just the averages and creating a column graph from there. While this looks more accurate I can't add error bars of any kind to it so there's not much hope.
My third attempt gave me this. I pressed the switch row column button and now I can have error bars, but I can't make them error bars based off of the calculated standard deviations, so they aren't correct.
Maybe I'm being silly but I've tried to search up how to do this but I can't seem to figure it out. Most of my searches have said I need to put in custom error bars but that is not an option for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

- Individual error bars w/ a clustered bar chart??I'm super new to Excel and I have a lab write-up due tomorrow and have been struggling with this one thing! So I've created a clustered bar chart with three separate categories and two bars within each category! I'm like 85% sure that my data is grouped within two series, the two series of either bar according to what shows when I open "Select Data." I'm looking to add error bars to the six individual bars with Standard Errors that I have calculated and stored in a workbook (I think it's called?) but can't find a way to do that? I've tried doing the "Format Error Bars" --> "Custom" --> "Specify Value" but it always groups the bars within the two series together! Seriously approaching my breaking point any help is much appreciated!!! I'm wondering if I need to completely redo the table my chart is drawing its data from so each bar is of a separate series? - Standard deviation error bars don't fit the specified values, are instead an order of magnitude larger.EDIT: SOLVED Solution was making sure that the negative and positive stdev corresponded to the same range. by default, the negative is set to one. not too sure what any of that means, but it worked. --- Hello, I've been trying my best to add standard deviation error bars to my data. I am on Mac. Raw data and graph However, as is evident in the image, these error bars are abnormally large. They are meant to match up with the "Average" column of the table at the top, but they obviously do not. My steps were as follows: Select the pH column and the Average column and insert a graph (A14:19 and H14:H19, respectively) Chart Design > Select Data. Set Y values to H14:H19 and Horizontal (category) axis labels to A14:A19. The filled out dialogue box is shown in the second image. Chart Design > Add Chart Element > Error Bars > Standard Deviation Open Chart Format Click on the error bars within the graph (which opens the "Format Error Bars" menu) Change the error bars from Standard Deviation(s) to Custom Select I14:I19 (the "StDev" column) as the data range for the Standard Deviation values. The \"Select Data\" dialogue box I have also tried changing the cell format of the StDev column "Number"; placing the values in a row rather than a column, and selecting that instead (D38:I38 in the first image), but to no avail. - Centering a bar graph data based on horizontal axis categories rather than by series.I don't know if this is the kind of question normally posed to this community and it is largely aesthetic, but here goes. I am making a graph for data that had technical replicates for each gene (A, B, and C). The genes (102 pqm1, 102 N2, and 96 N2) are on the horizontal axis and are the major category for the graph. Some replicates had a value of '0', which I do want to represent on the graph. The issue that one replicate (102 N2, C) failed and was removed from the data set, but even if I don't include that empty cell in the selection box for the series, Excel centers that category around the second series in that category. - Problem with getting charts to workHello, I am attempting to make a few charts for my assignment paper but excel is really not my strong suit.
