Explore how dark grey could make your spreadsheet experience more comfortable.

Are you frustrated by the starkness of pitch black dark mode in Excel 365?

A single, seemingly minor detail, dark grey versus pitch black, has become the breaking point for a dedicated Excel user. The post from *r/excel* captures a frustration that is both specific and widely shared. The user switched to Excel 365 specifically for dark mode, only to find the only option is a jarring, pitch-black interface. They are left wondering why a more comfortable dark grey alternative doesn't exist. Our take is straightforward: this isn't a trivial aesthetic preference. It is a clear signal that legacy spreadsheet tools are still designing for the machine, not for the person using it.

Pitch black might look dramatic in a product demo, but it creates real problems for extended work. High contrast between white text and a pure black background can cause eye strain, halation, and fatigue, especially in low-light environments. Dark grey offers a softer, more sustainable visual experience. It reduces glare while maintaining readability. The user's request is not niche, it is a practical, human-centered design choice that many productivity tools have already adopted. That a major application like Excel 365 overlooks this speaks to a broader gap between what the software delivers and what people actually need to work comfortably for hours.

This discussion matters because it reveals a deeper truth about the tools we rely on. Users are not asking for more features; they are asking for better ones. They want control over their environment, not a single, inflexible option that prioritizes visual drama over usability. The fact that this user had to search forums for any official discussion about dark grey, and found nothing, underscores how disconnected product decisions can be from daily experience. The people using these tools are not passive consumers. They are professionals, analysts, and creators who deserve interfaces that adapt to their workflows, not the other way around.

The solution is not a new version or a premium tier. It is a simple, deliberate choice: give users a dark grey mode. Let them choose between pitch black, dark grey, or light themes based on what feels best for their eyes and their environment. That is the kind of accessible, action-oriented design that respects the user's time and comfort. For anyone feeling stuck with an interface that strains rather than supports, the message is clear: your frustration is valid, and you are not alone. The next tool you explore should treat that feedback as a feature request, not an afterthought.

So I finally switched to Excel 365 only because I realized the full dark mode is only supported there. However I noticed the only option they have is pitch black dark mode but no dark grey one.

I know many users find dark grey more friendly on the eyes than pitch black.
