Fix Drop Down Menus in Your Poshmark Bulk Listing Tool

It sounds like you’re experiencing issues with the drop-down menus in the Poshmark Bulk Listing Tool spreadsheet.

This is a fixable problem, and it tells us less about your spreadsheet skills than about the disconnect between modern office software and tools designed for a different era. The #NAME? errors, the Compatibility Checker flagging "Significant Loss of Functionality," the "Restricted Access" warning, these aren't signs that you've broken something. They are the spreadsheet itself telling you, in its own cryptic language, that it was built for an older version of Excel and is struggling to run on Excel 2026.

Here's what's happening in plain terms. Poshmark's Bulk Listing tool relies on legacy Excel features, likely older data validation formulas or custom functions that Microsoft has changed or deprecated. When you open that file in a current version of Excel, the program tries to interpret those instructions and fails. The #NAME? error means Excel doesn't recognize the function being called. The Compatibility Checker is confirming that the file's design is incompatible with your software. And "Restricted Access" often means the file is using a feature that your version of Excel blocks by default for security reasons, like external data connections or macros. None of this is your fault, but it is your problem to solve.

The practical fix is straightforward. First, save the file in the older .xls format rather than the modern .xlsx format, then reopen it. This forces Excel into compatibility mode and often resolves #NAME? errors. If that doesn't work, try opening the file in Excel for the web, Microsoft's free browser version, which handles older spreadsheet structures more predictably than the desktop app. As a last resort, copy the data from the broken columns into a fresh spreadsheet and use Excel's Data Validation tool to rebuild the drop-downs yourself. It takes ten minutes and teaches you a skill that will outlast any template.

What this really means is that the tools we rely on for productivity are often held together by assumptions about software versions, file formats, and backward compatibility. A beginner should not need to troubleshoot a download. Poshmark could update its Bulk Listing tool to work with current versions of Excel, and Microsoft could make its compatibility warnings more actionable. Until they do, the most empowering thing you can do is learn to recognize these error messages for what they are: not a wall, but a door that requires a specific key. The key is knowing your software's version history, and that knowledge is worth far more than a working drop-down menu.

Hi, the drop down menus are not working on the spreadsheet I downloaded off of Poshmark named the Bulk Listing tool. The first column named Category with drop down menus work, so I choose a category and then the next two columns with drop down menus have #NAME? instead of the drop down choices. I believe the drop down menus are broken. To note, when I do the Compatibility Checker is says Significant Loss of functionality. Also, it says under Document Access that's it's Restricted Access. I am using excel 2026 on Microsoft 365 I believe. How do I fix…
