The recent Reddit post detailing a convoluted linked workbook issue highlights a persistent challenge for organizations still heavily reliant on legacy spreadsheet workflows. The scenario – a master inventory spreadsheet feeding data to multiple edge distribution center workbooks, experiencing inconsistent updates despite workbook links – is unfortunately common. While the poster rightly acknowledges the need for modernization with an internally developed portal, the immediate pain point demonstrates the fragility of complex spreadsheet ecosystems. It’s a situation many will recognize, often arising from well-intentioned attempts to build custom solutions on top of spreadsheet foundations. The core problem seems to stem from a disconnect between the master workbook’s calculation engine and the linked workbooks, only resolving when a formula is manually broken and re-entered – a temporary and unsustainable workaround. This process using linked workbooks was designed before I started at this org but we are in the process of modernising it with an internally developed portal. We have an immediate need to resolve the issue for now. So i'm not identified I have simplified the below.
We have a main distribution centre(referred to as MDC), whose inventory is fed by edge DC's(referred to by EDC)
We have a master inventory spreadsheet, its a beast that has a sheet for the MDC and one for each EDC.
The MDC sheet has a column for each EDC and product we have, then inventory manager will place a value on the day a product from an EDC need to ship to arrive at our MDC. The EDC's tab/sheet has a link in every cell to the MDC to auto update. Managers of the EDC's have view access to this workbook and its hosted in SharePoint Online.
Each EDC has a separate workbook with a workbook link back to their tab in the master inventory workbook.
The issue we are finding, if the inventory manager updates the MDC tab, the value comes across to the EDC's tab as expected. We are finding that linked value is not coming across to the separate EDC's workbook despite the workbook link refreshing.
If I open up the master inventory spreadsheet and break one of the EDC cell's formula and put something into the cell then the separate EDC workbook updates as expected.
Again, I know this process is convoluted hence us modernising it.

- Job has me doing a needlessly complicated taskMy job has a SharePoint and on it there are individual docs for different sales reps to input their data and one master list of all of them (there’s 7). My job wants me to have all the data from the individual sheets update into the master list. But I have never done that before and have been researching it and it’s just not practical the way I am doing it now. I downloaded all the spreadsheets from sharepoint, and finally got it so the formulas will work, the only problem is I have to do 1 at a time and I get a security notice every single time and then have to select the file again. I’m also not even sure if this will actually get it to update on the sharepoint. I have brought up multiple times how there are 2 easier solutions. One being to add the individual sheets to the master sheet so I can add formulas in excel online or just have all the sales reps put in the same data in the master list. - Can I "link" different spreadsheets together and make them "communicate"?i am new to excel but hoping to get a quick answer to my question as I am having trouble finding this on the web. i have Spreadsheet A where new hires get added to a list by someone else. This include their name, division, email, etc. I manage education and compliance in Spreadsheet B which includes me having to manually go through spreadsheet A and pulling all the info over. other than this inconvenience, the trouble is the person managing spreadsheet A deletes these people from her spreadsheet after she is done with their on boarding process so if i dont catch it, its a pain in the ass for me to get that info lol. is there a way for me to have my spreadsheet get updated when she updates hers, but not have that information deleted if she were to delete something from it? submitted by /u/AbleKaleidoscope877 [link] [comments]
- Spreadsheet that clears data upon openingI work for an organization that has a Employee Reimbursement Form that people access on our intranet. We've been using this spreadsheet for years now but we've hit a snag. We recently removed all old versions of Office (specifically Office 2019). The majority of our users have an E1 license, which means they do not get desktop applications, just web versions. So now, when our users want to fill out the form, they need to download it, save it to their OneDrive, open it in the web version and fill it out. Admin finds this very inconvenient and time consuming. I can take the spreadsheet and share it from a sharepoint site, so that it opens automatically in the web version, but we are running into problems because when we share it from a link, it retains all the data. So user A clicks on the link, opens the form and enters their data and closes it. It autosaves the spreadsheet with user A's data. Then user B opens it and sees the previous data still there. I did figure out a VB that makes it clear itself but that only works/runs on a desktop application version of Excel, not the online one. How can I post this spreadsheet on our intranet, either from OneDrive or SharePoint, and have the users be able to edit it but not save the data? submitted by /u/kcguru23 [link] [comments]
- Central Data Sheet efficiencyHoping that someone with some in depth technical knowledge of Excel can help me out with a query. We issue Finance Tracker spreadsheets to projects in our organisation, and then link them back to a central sheet that we use for monitoring and reporting. There are maybe 40-50 cells in each spreadsheet that we need to pull in to our central sheet, but they’re spread around the tracker and so are generally linked individually, and we’re now approaching 120 trackers that need to be linked, so the central sheet is starting to get quite slow to load and update. My question is this: When doing cross workbook cell look ups, do arrays work more efficiently than individual cell references, or is there no noticeable difference in runtime?
