Named ranges keep becoming invalid?
Our take
Hi there. So I have a workbook with several tabs in it, and in each of them, I have a named range called "SHIP" that refers to one single cell with a number in it. Below is a screenshot of the name manager so you can see what I'm working with...
I use them for two things: 1) in each of these tabs, there is a hyperlink to this cell so that I don't have to scroll way down to see it; 2) in another workbook, I have links to pull the value from each of these cells.
This was working without issue for a while. Then, this week, every single morning those links break. The hyperlinks give me a pop-up error saying the reference is invalid, and the data references show a #NAME? error. If I reenter the formulas exactly the same, they work fine, and the named ranges are still in the name manager unchanged. For the links in a separate workbook, it doesn't matter if I have this workbook open already, they still don't work. Actually, one time they worked until I opened the source workbook, then I got a #NAME? error. What the heck is going on?! Did I define the names improperly or something?
(This is Office 365 business version, btw!)

- SharePoint references won't updateHi there. My apologies if this has been asked before - I couldn't find a similar post, but I might have missed something. I have many workbooks that use SharePoint URLs to pull values from separate workbooks. These are just straight up single-cell references, no SUMIFs or anything fancy. Here's an example of one https://preview.redd.it/rfca88yh3ltg1.png?width=1088&format=png&auto=webp&s=067ff28653d6b6a502da71d9f8e471d805cb965a But for the past week or so, these have suddenly stopped updating reliably when the value in question changes. Notably, I do not get a #REF? error or anything like that. This happens even if the workbook it's referencing is open, and it happens in multiple workbooks where I have these kinds of links. A lot of these are columns where each cell references a cell in a column in another workbook. To fix (or make) these links, I copy the column from the referenced workbook and paste as links in the workbook where the links belong, but several times, when I do this, it turns AutoSave off and won't allow me to turn it back on unless I undo the paste, and instead of all paste options showing in the context menu, it only shows paste normal and paste links (no paste formatting, paste formulas, etc.) What the heck is going on?! Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you! submitted by /u/wackywizardz [link] [comments]
- Links to a cell within current worksheet keep changing the location, or doesn't work at all.I have a series of titles at the top of my worksheet with links to the most popular categories, hopefully to get to those categories quickly for data entry. I right click on the cell where I want the link, select Link, the enter the cell reference I want to jump to, with the text to display. This works. It presents a link, and if i click on the link, it jumps to exactly where I want it to go. However, over time, the cell reference isn't correct, and jumps to something else. I assume this is happening due to modifications of the worksheet or what it's from. I do not use "$" in the cell reference, assuming that if I enter A720 as the cell reference, the reference will automatically be modified to A730 if 10 rows are added. I have enough of these links that I shouldn't have to modify all of them each time there is an insertion or deletion. I tried using the formula =HYPERLINK(A730, "Category1") or =HYPERLINK('Shawna Smith'!A730, "Category1"), and neither of these work at all. It does not jump to A730 when I click on it. What am I doing wrong, or should I be using another feature or formula? Thank you for your help. https://preview.redd.it/nb4q3dm883tg1.png?width=649&format=png&auto=webp&s=cfc0c9e7f2d7e9d620075eebf6def8e7500f09fa submitted by /u/KatMagic1977 [link] [comments]
- Internal references are disappearing?tl;dr - excel is deleting reference formulas and leaving behind whatever the value was that was last input into that cell before it deleted the reference. Why is it deleting the reference and how do I stop it? Background info: My company uses an excel spreadsheet for calculating material costs when bidding for jobs. There are 12 different sheets in the workbook that have totals at the bottom from various vendors, and then a 13th sheet that displays and adds the totals of each page for a grand total. These are all in the same workbook. I've provided a mock-up attached of the problem area's visual set-up. How it's set up: Each 0.00 is a reference to the cell on each tab that totals the whole page. The reference looks something like ='Tab 1'!E104 and then a simply sum in the subtotal, multiplied for tax below that, and then the grand total being a sum of the two cells above it. The issue: It seems that sometimes while the file is being moved around (all within linked DropBox folders), the cells that hold the individual tab references all lose their references and are just replaced with whatever value was in the cell at the time it disconnects. I've tried recreating this issue without luck (only one employee is experiencing it, but then I have to redo all of the references on the file when it happens). He'll move it from one DB folder to another, add whatever data he needs to, and then move it back to a primary DB folder. At some point in that transition, all references are lost. There are no #REF (or any other kind of) errors - for example, the reference would have pulled $150 over, but now when you click on the cell, you don't see the formula I stated above, just that number as if it had been typed in rather than pulled from a reference cell. I've spent all day trying to figure this out for him so that it stops happening - I made test files and moved them around all over the place from Desktop to different DB folders and back. I had a theory that it was a Trust Center issue but have adjusted those settings on his system to trust the folders he works within and it still happened. I also tried thinks that I knew would probably break a file and would hit Enable Content thinking maybe when he got that prompt that was what was doing it but the references in my test files stayed even after all of this stress testing. Does anyone have any insight as to what's going on and how I can stop it from happening anymore? Thank for you making it to the end if you got this far, and even bigger thanks if you can provide any insight! submitted by /u/Aggressive_Toe_5953 [link] [comments]
- Named Table and Named Range - more data than shownI have a single workbook open. Previously, I added a table and named it tblLabInfo to use in a dropdown box I defined ddLabInfo. Everything works, but I remember adding the relevant information for a specific laboratory, yet it is not visible in tblLabInfo, but is available in ddLabInfo dropdown. Notice the underlined in "RED" laboratory names not in the tblLabInfo. I realize this makes no sense. What can be happening? https://preview.redd.it/jzjy4lw0byyg1.png?width=2411&format=png&auto=webp&s=ffbc3501285456ef85bcccd8767fe4749e7d91a1 https://preview.redd.it/0lplukw0byyg1.png?width=866&format=png&auto=webp&s=784faaef958f48c8885f40bafa5693c520618c4d https://preview.redd.it/6f3vgnw0byyg1.png?width=2030&format=png&auto=webp&s=add5b12197151aac1179cb8fbc5b974fdf3c1e46 https://preview.redd.it/ladxulw0byyg1.png?width=2385&format=png&auto=webp&s=a070233e403b9fb993be97900c02f1e569509985 submitted by /u/dcasciato [link] [comments]
