Turn scattered device counts into clear, total insights across all customers

Are you struggling to tally totals across multiple customers and their devices?

This is a deceptively simple request, and that is precisely what makes it worth addressing. The user has a straightforward data problem, multiple customers, each with a handful of devices, and a need to see the total count per device across all accounts. It is the kind of task that spreadsheet users encounter every day, and it reveals a quiet truth about how many of us still work: we treat our data like a ledger when it should behave like a system.

The issue here is not that the user lacks the skill to sum a few columns. The issue is that the structure of their sheet is fighting them. They have device counts scattered across rows per customer, but the real question is device-level totals, a pivot that traditional spreadsheets make you build manually. You can do it, of course. You can write a SUMIF, or copy-paste a pivot table, or even just eyeball the numbers and type them in. But every one of those steps is friction, and friction is the enemy of insight. The user is not asking for a complex transformation. They are asking for the data to tell them what they already know is there.

What this user needs is a tool that understands the relationship between customers and devices without requiring them to re-express that relationship in formulas. An AI-native spreadsheet should look at the raw rows, Customer 1, Device 1, amount 2; Customer 2, Device 1, amount 13, and offer to collapse that into a clean summary without the user having to specify every condition. That is not a feature request. It is a fundamental shift in how we expect software to meet us halfway. The user should be able to say, "Give me the total per device," and have the tool infer the grouping and the aggregation, then present it in a format that is ready to share or chart.

This is the kind of problem that feels small until you multiply it across a team, a department, or a business. Every time a user manually sums device counts across customers, they are not analyzing the data, they are wrestling with the container. The real value is in what comes after the total: comparing device usage trends, identifying popular hardware, or spotting customers who are outliers. Those insights are what drive decisions, and they should not be buried behind a wall of manual work. The solution is not a better formula. It is a spreadsheet that knows what you are trying to do and helps you get there in one step, not five.
