The real problem here isn't your laptop. It's the tool you're using.

Congratulations on the promotion. You earned it with skills that clearly impressed your CEO. But the fact that your first instinct after getting a blank check for a new machine is to ask which CPU and RAM configuration will stop Excel from crashing tells us everything about how deeply we've all been trained to accept broken workflows as normal. You're not asking for a better way to work. You're asking for a faster way to tolerate the same old limitations.

Your IT department is technically correct: a 10+ core processor with 20 threads and a heap of RAM will keep Excel from freezing as often. But that's like buying a stronger pair of crutches when what you really need is a surgery that fixes the leg. Those shared files you inherited, years of accumulated data, formulas that no one dares touch, sheets that groan under their own weight, they aren't going to become efficient just because you threw hardware at them. You'll still be closing apps, restarting after crashes, and losing minutes of your day to a tool that was never designed for the scale you're operating at.

What you're experiencing isn't a hardware bottleneck. It's a software ceiling. Spreadsheets were built for a world where a few thousand rows was a big dataset. Today, you're working with shared files that contain years of institutional knowledge, and the tool treats that asset like a burden. The real upgrade isn't a laptop with more cores. It's a platform that treats your data like a living system, not a fragile document. AI-native spreadsheets don't just calculate faster, they reorganize, query, and surface insights without making you fight the frame rates.

So here's what we'd tell you: take that blank check from your CEO, but spend it on something smarter. Buy a solid mid-range laptop that won't embarrass you in meetings, then invest the rest of your budget, and more importantly, your time, into learning a tool that actually respects your data. Ask your IT department what they support that isn't a spreadsheet. Ask your peers what they use when their models outgrow a grid. And stop asking which processor will make Excel stop crashing. The answer is: none of them will, not really. The only fix is to stop asking Excel to do what it was never built to do.

So just got a promotion mainly in part to my excel skills, which are nothing to brag to this group about but that’s a different story, during my presentation my CEO told me to pick out any laptop I want to ensure it has what I need to run excel how I need it to.
