When your formula bar edits freeze the cursor, your spreadsheet stops flowing

A formula bar that won't release the cursor after a trackpad edit is the kind of maddening glitch that turns a simple workflow into a battle of will.

The formula bar should be a place of precision, not a source of friction. Yet here we are: a user on a brand-new M5 MacBook Air with 24 GB of RAM finds that simply using the trackpad to reposition the cursor inside a formula causes Excel to lock up. The status bar stays on "Edit," arrow keys go dead, and the only fix is a clumsy keyboard-only workaround. This isn't a corner case. It's a fundamental breakdown in the flow state that spreadsheets are supposed to enable.

What makes this story particularly telling is the user's methodical troubleshooting. They tried restarting, reinstalling, updating macOS, Safe Mode, a fresh user account, even a whole new computer. The problem persisted across two major Excel versions, Tahoe 26.6 and Golden Gate 27.0.1. Their older M2 Air works fine. This points squarely at a compatibility or driver issue between Excel and Apple's newest hardware, one that Microsoft has not yet addressed. It echoes a concern we raised in our recent piece about Apple tightens macOS data access as AI agents reshape security risks: as Apple tightens system-level controls, third-party applications can stumble in unexpected ways. Here, the trigger is not a security permission but a simple trackpad gesture, yet the result is the same: a tool that should empower the user instead traps them.

For anyone who lives inside spreadsheets, this is a productivity killer disguised as a minor glitch. The user's temporary fix, re-enter cell-editing mode via keyboard, then press Return without touching the trackpad, works, but it breaks the natural rhythm of editing. You shouldn't have to memorize a ritual to avoid a bug in 2025. This is precisely the kind of friction that makes people question whether their tools are working for or against them. In our guide to One click to edit text in your spreadsheet cells, we explored how small interface improvements can dramatically improve workflow. The opposite is also true: a single broken interaction, repeated dozens of times a day, adds up to real frustration.

The open question is whether Microsoft will treat this as a high-priority fix or let it linger. The user has done the hard work of isolating the variable, it's the new M5 hardware, not a software conflict or user error. That should make it reproducible and fixable. Until then, anyone on a recent MacBook Air faces a choice: edit formulas entirely by keyboard, or accept that every trackpad-based cursor adjustment carries a risk of freezing the interface. That is not a choice anyone should have to make in a modern productivity tool.

I’m having a frustrating issue on a new M5 MacBook Air (24 GB RAM). After using an M2 Macbook Air for years, I had to get a new work Macbook Air that is causing issues that I've never seen before.
