Microsoft shipped a feature that crashes Excel when you resize a window. That is not a minor bug. That is a fundamental failure of quality assurance, and it tells us something important about how AI features are being bolted onto tools that millions of people rely on every day.

The trigger is absurdly simple. A user enables the "Collapse the ribbon automatically" option, shrinks the workbook window, then expands it again. Excel crashes every time, unless the Copilot icon is moved to float over the worksheet instead of sitting in the ribbon. The Copilot icon itself is the problem. It occupies a special place in the UI, separate from the customizable ribbon elements, and when the ribbon collapses and re-expands, the icon triggers a crash. This is not a corner case. Resizing windows is something spreadsheet users do constantly, whether they are comparing data side by side, presenting results on a projector, or just organizing their workspace.

We have written before about how to Discover smarter workflows from the week's top Excel community insights and how to Stop letting data problems masquerade as pivot table problems. Those pieces focus on helping users work more effectively within Excel's existing capabilities. This crash story flips the script. Instead of helping users work smarter, Microsoft introduced a feature that actively sabotages a basic, routine action. When AI integration creates a 100% reproducible crash on a standard workflow, it is not progress. It is a regression.

The deeper issue here is design philosophy. The user who reported this bug put it plainly: "This would not be happening if the icon was just a customizable part of the normal ribbon instead of its own special part of the UI." That is correct. The Copilot icon was given a privileged position in the interface, separate from the standard ribbon components that have been tested across millions of configurations for years. When you treat an AI assistant as a special overlay rather than an integrated tool, you introduce new failure modes that the rest of the interface was not designed to handle. The crash is a symptom of treating AI as an add-on instead of building it into the foundation.

The concrete takeaway is this: If you use Copilot in Excel and have the "Collapse the ribbon automatically" option enabled, move the Copilot icon to float over the worksheet until Microsoft fixes this. That workaround prevents the crash, but it should not be necessary. The question Microsoft needs to answer is whether they will treat Copilot as a first-class, tested component of the ribbon or continue to let it float outside the normal quality assurance process. For now, users are left to choose between losing work or losing access to the AI features they were promised would make their lives easier.

I have the "Collapse the ribbon automatically" option enabled. When I make any workbook window small enough to collapse the ribbon, then expand the window big enough so the ribbon appears again, Excel crashes, 100% of the time. If I select the "move to bottom" option so the Copilot icon is floating over the worksheet, the crash does not occur.
