Why your find and replace isn't finding values: and what to explore next.

If you're experiencing an issue where the Find and Replace feature in Excel only allows you to search within formulas, you're not alone.

A user on Reddit recently ran into a baffling problem. They opened Find and Replace in Excel to update some values, only to discover the dialog box had silently removed the option to search in "Values" or "Comments." It offered only "Formulas." They ran updates, performed a full Office repair, and tested multiple files. The issue persisted across everything. This is not a niche glitch. It is a symptom of a deeper friction that millions of spreadsheet users encounter every day.

Our take is straightforward: this kind of roadblock is exactly why the traditional spreadsheet model is overdue for a rethink. The user did everything right, they updated, they repaired, they tested. And the tool still failed to do something as fundamental as finding data. When a core feature like Find and Replace breaks in a way that is opaque and unresolvable through standard troubleshooting, the problem isn't just the bug. It's the underlying assumption that users should accept these limits as normal. You shouldn't have to wonder whether your data is hiding in a formula or a value. You shouldn't have to fight the interface to locate the information you already entered.

What this means for you is practical. If you have ever spent ten minutes trying to find a number that "should be there," only to discover it was stored as a formula result or a text string, you have already felt this friction. Find and Replace is a gateway action, it's how you clean, correct, and consolidate data. When that gateway is unreliable, every subsequent task becomes slower. The user's experience is a clear signal that the current toolset is not designed for the way people actually work. Instead, it forces users to adapt to the software's internal logic rather than the other way around.

The solution is not to wait for another patch or to memorize workarounds. It is to explore tools that treat data as data, not as formulas, values, or comments in separate silos. AI-native spreadsheets can understand the content of a cell, regardless of how it was created. They can find a number whether it was typed, calculated, or imported. They can even ask what you mean if the search is ambiguous. The user in this story spent time diagnosing a tool that should have been invisible. The next step is to find a tool that puts your intent first, not its internal architecture. If you are tired of troubleshooting the basics, it is time to explore a solution that empowers your data journey, one where Find and Replace actually finds what you are looking for.

This is a new one for me. Today I wanted to use find and replace to change some values in a spreadsheet. However, the dialog only gives me the option to look in formulas. I've run all available updates, did a full repair on Office, and tried multiple different files; this is present everywhere.
