How do I filter out cells that I want so then I can copy the information next to it to paste the filtered data onto a new sheet?
Our take
The challenge faced by this university student highlights a fundamental shift in how we approach data organization and analysis. Moving beyond basic spreadsheet operations to meaningful statistical work requires more than just technical proficiency—it demands a workflow that empowers rather than impedes discovery. When dealing with confidence intervals and grouped data analysis, the ability to cleanly separate and transfer relevant subsets becomes crucial. Assistance with advanced filter options demonstrates how these seemingly simple tasks can quickly reveal the limitations of traditional approaches, while How to make that a cell in a new table only shows a filter result of another table? points toward more sophisticated solutions that maintain data integrity throughout the analytical process.
What makes this scenario particularly instructive is how it reveals the gap between learning spreadsheet mechanics and developing productive analytical workflows. The student's instinct to manually select and copy data reflects a natural starting point, but it also exposes the friction points that accumulated manual processes create. Each copy-paste operation introduces potential for error, each manual selection represents time that could be invested in actual analysis rather than data manipulation. The desire to simply "highlight all the inner and then just control shift left" speaks to a deeper need for tools that understand the relationship between data points and can act on those relationships intelligently.
This is where modern approaches to spreadsheet technology begin to show their value. Rather than treating data as static cells to be manipulated individually, AI-native platforms recognize patterns and relationships, enabling users to express intent rather than execute mechanical steps. The distinction between "inner" and "outer" locations isn't just a filtering condition—it's a logical partition that should be maintained automatically across related data points. When a platform understands that median price values belong to their corresponding distance categories, operations become declarative rather than procedural. Users can focus on asking questions of their data rather than wrestling with the mechanics of data management.
The educational context amplifies why this matters beyond individual productivity gains. Students learning statistical concepts shouldn't have to master complex data manipulation techniques before they can engage with the concepts themselves. When tools fade into the background, allowing direct focus on analytical thinking, the learning experience transforms. The confidence interval calculation becomes about understanding statistical inference rather than debugging selection operations. This shift from mechanical execution to conceptual engagement represents a more effective path to mastery, where technology serves as an enabler rather than an obstacle.
As academic institutions continue evolving their curricula to include data literacy, the expectation that students will seamlessly transition between analysis and presentation grows stronger. The question isn't just about finding a better way to copy cells—it's about creating environments where analytical thinking can flourish without artificial barriers. What might your own analytical workflows look like if the tools you use understood not just what you wanted to accomplish, but why you wanted to accomplish it?
im new to using excel because of uni and im struggling trying to filter my data so that i can calculate confidence intervals.
So basically i started off with two columns cbd dist and median price, but i need to assign words to the cbd dist values (the cbd dist values r in km, and inner is assigned to a value that is less than or equal to 14.75km) which i managed to do after ages googling.
However now I want to only copy the inner group and its corresponding median price values so that i can paste it nicely on another excel sheet for my calculations (as its mixed with outer right now, i also need to split the values so i just have a list of outer and its numbers).
So I need something where i can highlight all the inner and then just control shift left so i can get the median values.
Does anyone know how I can do this?? Thanks in advance and I’d really appreciate all the help I can get as im stumped atm.
Also im new to this subreddit and my old post with an image of the data got removed, lmk if you guys need a ref

- Assistance with advanced filter optionsI have a report that is being generated through some janky software, and unfortunately the way I am getting the excel document can't be changed. This is a very basic example of what the sheet looks like, the actual generated report is thousands of rows: https://imgur.com/a/d0jNtNx For example, I want to filter for Bob's name in column A and also see all of Bob's associated comments in column B. If I apply a filter for Bob in column A, it hides everything in column B that are the relevant comments (obviously). To clarify, I want a filter to make it look like this: https://imgur.com/a/pgVJsLm And not like this: https://imgur.com/a/wCev8uH Perhaps the filter function isn't the right approach, so I am open to alternatives. submitted by /u/drspudbear [link] [comments]
- How to make that a cell in a new table only shows a filter result of another table?I have an entire table with all the data that I need and it already has filters, a total row and a couple of slicers. What I want to do next is to make a summary of the data after I filter it, basically a new table but it only shows the total amount of data after applying filters. I already tried using the subtotal function in the new table while referencing the original table with filters on it and also the row function. Any idea of how to do this or if is actually possible to do it? edit: i have microsoft 365 for business version 2602 https://preview.redd.it/xcikij4fo3ng1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=9108876c9dc93a937de15550a25ae1fe7d1e8573 submitted by /u/HomeworkOk7092 [link] [comments]
- Help locating specific data from rangeHello all, I was wondering if someone could assisst me. Im still learning excel and having some success, but currently im struggling with a problem. I have a bunch of data across multiple cells. Some columns would have time stamps, location, error codes, vehicle numbers etc. Lets say i have a bunch of data for all vehicles and errors. How would i go about automatically filtering through the data looking for, example, error code 515. Ideally have an entire sheet that shows all data but just for a specific error code. Or a name. I appreciate any help on the matter. Even if you point me in the direction of useful information, videos etc. Id be very grateful. Thank you submitted by /u/liveactiongeek [link] [comments]
- How to confront multiple sheets against each other?English is not my first language, if anything doesn't make sense pls ask. I am currently trying to filter a bigger excel for a conference programm, their file was divided as such sheets: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4 -> this containes, for each day in the title of the sheet each conference title for a given room at a given time. I created other sheets, which i named as the main topic. for example: Hybrid if the sheets containes mentions of hybrid as a word in the session or title of the conference. I am now stuck, since I only searched my main interest and created new sheets only for the word I choose. I now have a incomplete subdivision, since I didn't copy each and every conference. I would like to create a new sheets named OTHERS in which I import any conference I don't have in the specific sheets I created. So for example if in Day 1, row7 column 15 never appear in each new sheets I created (hybrid, liquid, ...) I want that row imported in the sheets OTHERS. Is there a way to do this, even only by finding the single row# column# and then I can manually create the table for the new sheets OTHERS. Or I just need to filter manually or use an AI (which i don't like to do since I want to use excel if possible) submitted by /u/Candid-Note6320 [link] [comments]
