I have been having this issue on and off for the last several months. It will randomly occur a couple of times a week and then go away with no rhyme or reason and no discernible trigger. Since Monday, Excel has become almost unusable to me. It just keeps locking out in the same way sometimes within seconds of opening a single file.
Excel will just stop updating visually. I'm still able to click in cells, scroll, use the ribbon, save or even open files. But nothing will update visually. I can scroll, but it won't display that I have scrolled it stays wherever it was before it locked out. I could open and edit cells but I wouldn't be able to actually see what happened. The one saving grace is that I'm able to at least save the workbook and close it. Though I have to do this with hotkeys because all dialog boxes are absolutely blank.
I have tried resetting the computer, running any repair service on Microsoft office, clearing the roaming data, forcing an exit from the task manager, and several other miscellaneous fixes to no avail. I'm trying to at least see how prevalent this is because trying to search for this online or even using co-pilot to better understand it is yielding nothing.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone know of any potential fixes? Thank you in advance to any replies.

Users report that Excel will lock up when switching between applications or when copying between Excel workbooks. The freeze can last around 10–30 seconds, after which Excel either recovers or occasionally crashes completely. If excel recovers for several more seconds clicking a cell sometimes selects the wrong cell or highlights an entire range instead of the single cell that was clicked. For example, the user clicks one cell but Excel highlights several cells nearby. Maybe an issue with DPI scaling issues? Some environment details: Microsoft Excel (Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise) Monthly Enterprise Channel Most affected machines running version 16.0.19530.20226 Some users on 16.0.19426.20260 Mix of Windows 10 and Windows 11 The issue appears across different machines and hardware, including multiple laptop brands and models with both lower and higher specs, so it doesn’t seem to be related to performance. It also doesn’t appear tied to workbook size as the issue happens with both small spreadsheets and larger ones. Resources look normal when the freeze occurs. Typical triggers seem to be: copying between Excel workbooks switching between Excel and another application (browser, Outlook, etc.) returning focus back to Excel Files are opened from a mix of locations: OneDrive SharePoint OneDrive SharePoint sync folders local files Users are working on laptops connected to external monitors, usually with the laptop screen still open as well. Some setups do have mixed display scaling (e.g. laptop at 150% and monitor at 100%) which could be causing the crashes? - Has Excel been garbage for other people lately, too?I’ve used it for over a decade and just this past year, I feel like it’s having an issue at least everyday. It’s mostly with the focus switching to the wrong workbook, clicking in cells not being registered correctly, and some keyboard shortcuts just breaking randomly until I restart. Working in excel used to be a pleasure; now it annoys me at least a couple times a day. I mostly just needed to vent because wtf Microsoft? - Excel buffering while working between 2 workbooksHi everyone, Since the second last Office update, working in split screen with multiple excels has become very tiresome. When working between 2+ workbooks, my excel suddenly needs a few seconds to "load" the excel book before I can start interacting with it. Since the same update, it is almost impossible to work in a shared excel because everytime an edit is made by a different user, it has to restart to reflect the changes. While I can probably learn to live with these issues, I would prefer not to. It is quite frustrating. I have tried looking for this issue only but haven't had any luck. I would really appreciate it if anyone has any insight on how to fix these problems. Thanks! - How to stop Excel Online from being so slow?Since an update a few years back, I want to say two or three (it was some UI changes mostly) my Excel Online has just been unbearably slow. Just a few minutes ago I added a new sheet to an existing file. For some background it was previously a single sheet 13x47 table with 2 columns of simple calculations (one adding up a couple columns, and another doing some division), 282 cells being used. The new sheet took 2 minutes to process and actually be created. It is currently a 6x21 table, but by the time I created the 3rd of 6 columns it froze and had an error then reloaded itself putting me back to only 2 columns made. It did this again then 3 times more before I finished the table, each time taking several minutes. There is not a lot of data in the file, there's simple calculations without function calls, and I have no issues with my internet connection. I could make a new file and still have the same issues. I often have to reload a file 10+ times before I can complete some simple data entry. I do know there's a banner that pops up from time-to-time about my internet settings but clicking the hyperlink that comes with it just crashes the file again. I also know that Firefox (the browser I use) will occasionally try to get me to close the page because it's lagging out so bad. Lastly, the files work fine on my phone browser. Anyone know what could be causing this?
