Sorting Age Ranges Correctly When Spreadsheets Get the Order Wrong

Are you frustrated by Excel sorting age ranges incorrectly?

The moment you type "5-9" into a spreadsheet and watch it land after "45-49," you've hit the wall that separates a tool from a partner. Traditional spreadsheets sort alphabetically by default, so "5-9" is treated as text starting with the character "5," which in ASCII comes after "4." That is technically correct behavior for a general-purpose grid, but it is functionally useless for anyone working with age ranges, income brackets, or any ordered categorical data. The problem is not that the software is broken, it is that the software does not understand what your data means.

This is where we draw a firm line. A spreadsheet that cannot distinguish between alphabetical and logical order is not serving you; it is forcing you to bend your thinking around its limitations. The workaround, splitting the text into separate start and end columns, converting those to numbers, sorting by the start value, then recombining, is a ritual millions of users repeat daily. It works, but it wastes time and introduces error. Every manual step is a chance to mis-sort a row or lose a hyphen. The real cost is not the five minutes it takes to fix; it is the accumulated friction that makes you hesitate before asking "what if I sort by this column?" because you know the answer will be wrong.

Our view is straightforward: data tools should adapt to the way people think, not the way text strings are encoded. An AI-native spreadsheet can recognize that "5-9" is a range, infer the numeric start point, and sort it logically alongside every other range, without you writing a formula, splitting a column, or remembering that text sorting is alphabetical. This is not a future feature; it is a baseline expectation. When a tool cannot handle the most common pattern in demographic data, it is not innovative, it is legacy software wearing a fresh interface.

For anyone managing survey results, census data, or customer segments, this issue is a daily reminder that your tools are one step behind your intent. You do not need another tutorial on how to create helper columns. You need a system that sees "0-4" and "5-9" and understands they belong next to each other. The fix is not a better workaround; it is a better foundation. If your spreadsheet cannot sort age ranges correctly, the problem is not the data.

I want to sort a data set which contain age ranges 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14.. and so on.

Issue comes when 5-9 does not come after 0-4 and instead comes after 45-49 and before 50-54.
