Why your spreadsheet's first column of numbers won't print

Is your Excel sheet missing the first column when you print?

A moment that feels almost universal is captured. A parent's spreadsheet, a simple question, and the sudden realization that something as basic as printing numbers from the first column has become a puzzle. The frustration isn't about the data, it's about the tool itself. When a spreadsheet behaves in ways that aren't obvious, even to someone who uses it regularly, the technology stops being helpful and starts being a barrier.

The problem here is likely a print area setting, a hidden column, or a formatting quirk that Excel users have learned to diagnose through trial and error. But that's exactly the point. The fact that someone has to ask why their numbers won't print, and that the answer isn't immediately discoverable, tells us something important about where spreadsheets still fall short. These tools were built for flexibility, but that flexibility often comes at the cost of clarity. A user shouldn't need to know about print area definitions or column width thresholds just to get a list of names and phone numbers onto paper.

What this story really highlights is the gap between what spreadsheets *can* do and what they *should* do. Modern data tools should anticipate common actions like printing. They should surface the reason a column is missing from the output, or better yet, simply include it by default unless the user explicitly says otherwise. The technology exists to make these interactions intuitive. The fact that a mother has to ask her child, and that child has to ask the internet, suggests that the legacy design of these tools hasn't kept pace with how people actually work.

We see this as a call for a different approach. One where the software adapts to the user, not the other way around. If a spreadsheet's first column of numbers won't print, the tool should offer a clear explanation and a one-click fix. That's not a revolutionary idea, it's a basic expectation for any tool that claims to handle data. The future of spreadsheets isn't about more features buried in menus. It's about removing the friction that makes a simple task feel like a debugging session. Until that changes, the question "Why won't my first column print?" will keep appearing in forums, and that's a problem worth solving.

This is my mom's Excel file. She asked me why it isn't printing the numbers in the first column. I can't see anything obvious about why it isn't printing, but I don't know enough about Excel to know what to look for. The columns are numbers (1-46), then Name, Home Phone, Cell Phone, and email address.

I don't know what version she's using, but I'm using Microsoft 365 and am current.
