Autofill Across Columns Without Repetition Using Smart Patterns

Are you frustrated that your Excel autofill feature is not delivering the results you need?

Here's a strange thing about spreadsheets: they promise logic, but they often deliver only what we tell them, not what we mean. A user on Reddit recently asked why Excel's fill handle repeats a pattern like "G01E G02E G03E" across columns instead of continuing it to "G04E G05E G06E." The answer from the community was practical, use the fill handle to drag horizontally, or write a formula, but the question itself reveals a deeper frustration. Legacy tools expect you to think like a machine. You have to anticipate their limitations and work around them. That is not how software should behave.

The problem is not that the user lacked skill. They understood the pattern. They selected the first three cells and pulled the handle, which is the standard move. Excel saw three distinct values and treated them as a closed set to repeat, not as a sequence to extend. The tool assumed the user wanted replication, not progression. That assumption is baked into decades-old design logic. It works fine for simple lists, but the moment your data has nuance, a prefix, a number, a suffix, the tool stops helping and starts guessing. And when it guesses wrong, you are left searching forums for workarounds.

This is where the conversation should shift. Instead of asking "How do I fix this in Excel?" the better question is "Why does my tool force me to fix this at all?" Modern data work is rarely about static repetition. It is about patterns that grow, adapt, and respond to context. An AI-native spreadsheet should recognize that "G01E G02E G03E" is a sequence, not a trio of unrelated labels. It should infer the increment, apply it across columns, and let you move on to the actual work, analyzing, deciding, building. That is not a feature request. It is a baseline expectation for a tool that claims to be intelligent.

Our take is straightforward: if your spreadsheet cannot follow a basic numeric pattern without you writing a custom formula or searching for a thread, it is not serving you. It is making you do its job. The path forward is not to memorize more obscure functions. It is to demand that your tools understand patterns the same way you do. Start by expecting more from the applications you use every day. The ones that learn from your intent, not just your input, are the ones worth adopting.

Im trying to create an excel document and I want to auto fill across multiple columns.

When I select the first 3 cells and use the fill handle it just repeats them. What I want it to do is by this example.
