Automate Your Spreadsheets by Pulling Folder Names From Any Drive

Pulling folder names from a drive with over 3,000 subfiles is exactly the kind of repetitive task that shouldn't be done by hand.

A task that sounds trivial, pulling folder names into a spreadsheet, quickly becomes a bottleneck when you're facing thousands of entries. A user on a forum recently asked for help automating exactly this: they needed a table of sub-folder names from a D drive, with over 3,000 folders to catalog. Typing each name by hand was not an option, and frankly, it never should have been. Our take is clear: if you're still manually transcribing file structures into cells, you're spending time on work that a spreadsheet should do for you.

This isn't just about avoiding tedium. It's about recognizing that the tools we use for data management have evolved. The same logic that lets you find exact row matches across tables with a smarter formula approach can be extended to pull dynamic metadata from your file system. When you connect a spreadsheet to your actual data sources, whether that's a drive, a database, or an API, you stop treating your table as a static document and start treating it as a living interface. The user's problem was fundamentally a connection problem, not a typing problem. And the solution exists: modern spreadsheet tools, especially AI-native ones, can query folder structures directly, update as files change, and eliminate the manual upkeep that traditionally drags projects down.

We've covered similar frustrations before. Consider the reader who struggled with row insertion no longer breaks your spreadsheet formulas, a small structural change that used to cascade into broken references. And the user at an internship who found their copy-paste struggles with formulas wasting hours on template duplication. Each of these stories shares a pattern: the user is doing work the spreadsheet should own. Folder names, formula consistency, structural updates, these are not manual data entry tasks. They are automation opportunities.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: before you type out a single cell, ask whether the information can be pulled, referenced, or computed instead. In this case, the user could have used a built-in directory function, a script, or an AI-powered formula to import all sub-folder names in seconds. The specific approach matters less than the mindset shift. Spreadsheets should be your assistant, not your notepad. If you're spending hours copying folder names, you're missing the point of having a spreadsheet at all. The next time you face a repetitive data-gathering task, pause. There is almost certainly a smarter way to connect your data to your table, and you deserve to use it.

So im trying to make an ongoing changing table. For the table info I need file folder names, not the info in the folder just the folder name. The drive current looks like.

So I need to make a table of the sub file name. Any help on how to do it. There are over 3000 files so I dont want to type each name individually.
