Let your spreadsheet auto-populate monthly themes across sheets with ease

Are you struggling to keep your spreadsheet updated with monthly themes that change based on today's date?

This is a familiar frustration, and it points to a real limitation in how most people use spreadsheets. The user here has a system that works, a monthly theme, a data source, a separate sheet, but the system requires manual upkeep. They have already discovered how to pull a static value from one cell to another. What they need is a way to make that reference *dynamic*, shifting automatically as the calendar moves forward. That's not a niche request; it is a daily workflow problem for anyone who manages recurring data.

The solution they are reaching for is a conditional lookup based on the current date. Instead of pointing at a single cell, the formula should check the current month, find the matching row in the original table, and return the corresponding theme. In most spreadsheet tools, this can be done with a combination of functions like INDEX and MATCH, or with a FILTER that compares the month of today's date to the month column. The key insight is that the date range column in their source sheet is redundant, if every month runs from the first to the last day, the month name alone is enough to drive the lookup. That design choice adds unnecessary complexity, but it does not break the approach.

What matters here is not the specific formula syntax. What matters is that the user recognized a pattern, monthly rotation, dependent sheets, risk of inconsistency, and asked the right question. They did not ask how to copy and paste faster. They asked how to make the spreadsheet *respond* to time. That is the shift from using a spreadsheet as a static document to using it as a living tool. The difference is not technical sophistication; it is intentionality. Anyone who manages content calendars, editorial schedules, inventory rotations, or recurring reports has this exact need. The spreadsheet should not be a museum where you update exhibits by hand. It should be a clock that turns the page for you.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: if you find yourself updating the same value across multiple sheets each month, stop. Build a single source of truth and let the date drive the reference. The formula will take a few minutes to set up. The time it saves will compound every single month afterward. That is the difference between managing data and being managed by it.

Hi! I’ve spent a good hour trying to figure things out on my own, but I figured asking wouldn’t hurt.

I have a spreadsheet listing out topics that rotate on a monthly basis. I want the title of that theme to auto-populate on a different sheet in the same spread so that it changes on a monthly basis, and for them to be the same in case the original topic changes as well
