Restoring Speed to Your Spreadsheet Error Fixes

If your weekly Excel files keep arriving as text, the error fix button was likely your quiet savior.

There is a specific frustration in the original error fix button's disappearance that deserves attention. The user's weekly Excel files arrive as text, a small annoyance they had solved with one click. Now that click has been replaced by an AI feature that takes ten to fifteen seconds for a task that used to take two. The real issue is not the feature's existence. It is that the tool changed without warning, and the user cannot get the old behavior back, even though colleagues still have it. That split rollout, with no clear path to opt out, is the kind of silent friction that erodes trust. It is not about being anti-AI. It is about control over your own workflow, which is a reasonable thing to expect from a tool you rely on.

This story connects to a larger theme we have explored in Talking to My AI Clone Taught Me to Question the Tech. There, the discomfort came from interacting with a machine that felt close to human. Here, the discomfort is more mundane but more common: AI is being inserted into routine tasks without being asked, and the cost is measured in seconds and lost muscle memory. It also echoes what we saw in Navigating AI/ML Job Requirements: A Shift in Expected Skills, where the pressure to adopt AI often ignores the human cost of learning new systems. The user is not resisting progress. They are resisting a slower, less predictable version of the same task.

What would we tell this reader? First, you are not wrong to be annoyed. Ten seconds may not sound like much, but repeated dozens of times a week, it adds up to real lost time. Second, there are workarounds. You can try changing the cell format manually, but if that is blocked, check for an update or a settings toggle that might restore the legacy button. Sometimes the rollout is gradual, which explains why colleagues still see the old version. If that fails, consider a simple macro or a script that mimics the two-second fix. It is not ideal, but it puts the control back in your hands.

The deeper lesson is that AI features will keep appearing in familiar tools, often uninvited. The question is not whether they are powerful, but whether they respect the user's existing habits. A good tool should make the easy path faster, not slower. Verify Your AI's Understanding: A Simple Check for Tax Season reminds us that verification matters, but so does predictability. When an interface changes without consent, it breaks the mental model you built. The specific detail to watch here is the timing: if the AI button is slower because it is actually doing more, that should be communicated clearly, not silently swapped in. The user deserves to know what they are trading away. That is the real fix worth asking for.

Ive used the error fix button often due to a few excel files I get each week being saved as text instead of a number. For some reason, the button changed to AI where it takes around 10-15 seconds to fix something that used to take 2. Is there a way to remove this feature and get the old error button back? Other people in the office still have the original button and im not sure why I dont anymore. Or is there a way to change the cells manually, because it wouldn't let me do that either.
