Are you struggling to get your darts league table in Excel to accurately reflect the highest checkout scores?

**Our Take: The spreadsheet that almost worked, and why that's the point**

This user's frustration is familiar to anyone who has pushed a traditional spreadsheet beyond its intended limits. They built a three-sheet system for their local darts league, got it 95% of the way there with ChatGPT's help, and then hit a wall: the maximum checkout column wouldn't populate automatically. Fifteen attempts later, the fix remained elusive. The problem isn't their effort or their Excel skills. The problem is that spreadsheets were never designed to handle this kind of dynamic, player-by-player, round-by-round calculation without manual intervention. The user is asking a tool from 1985 to behave like an intelligent data engine.

What this user actually needs is not a better formula. They need a spreadsheet that understands that a "highest checkout" isn't a static cell, it's a relationship between a player, a round, and a running maximum. In a traditional spreadsheet, that relationship has to be rebuilt every time a new player joins or a new round starts. The user already discovered the symptom: when they manually typed the value into the calculation sheet, the final table updated correctly. That proves their logic is sound. The gap is in the connective tissue between their raw data sheet and their calculation sheet. An AI-native spreadsheet would handle that connection automatically, recognizing that "highest checkout for Player X across all rounds" is a query, not a cell reference.

This is where the practical value of smarter tools becomes undeniable. The user shouldn't have to understand array formulas, named ranges, or indirect references to track a darts league. They should be able to say "show me each player's highest checkout so far" and have the system infer the structure from their data. The AI-generated spreadsheet they built got them close, but it couldn't bridge that final gap because it was still working within Excel's rigid grid logic. A truly AI-powered spreadsheet would treat that data as a living set of relationships, not a static arrangement of cells.

The lesson here is direct: if your spreadsheet requires fifteen attempts and a forum post to solve a single column, the tool is working against you, not for you. This user's darts league deserves a solution that adapts to their workflow, not the other way around. The technology exists to make that possible. The question is whether we're willing to stop forcing our data into a grid that was never meant to hold it.

i am sorry if something is not explained properly, i am not very experienced in excel.

I made excel table for local darts league via chat gpt in order to keep track of stats and league standings of my local league but the only thing GPT has issues with is to make maximum checkout number showing in final sheet based on below. it uses 3 sheets 1 for me writing the data, 2nd for calculations and 3rd to show the table and keep the leaderboard clean.
