Leveraging a decade of manual digitization efforts, we’ve recovered 575,729 crop labels from 1,765 rare Urdu books, revealing a surprising truth: simple human guidance outperforms scaling neural networks. Our work at the Ibteda Digital Library demonstrates that ten operator-corrected crops per book significantly improved image recognition accuracy, exceeding gains from larger datasets or complex models like ResNet-50. This approach, focused on calibrating for consistent human preferences—specifically, a preferred margin inset—highlights the critical role of domain expertise.
